Shift in soil bacterial communities from K- to r-strategists facilitates adaptation to grassland degradation

Junwei Peng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the assembly processes of bacterial communities in grasslands with different degrees of degradation. The results show that with increased grassland degradation, bacterial richness decreases while functional gene richness increases. Different phyla exhibit distinct response strategies.

Disruption of Firmicutes and Actinobacteria abundance in tomato rhizosphere causes the incidence of bacterial wilt disease

Sang-Moo Lee et al.

Summary: The study showed that enrichment of protective microbiota in the rhizosphere facilitates disease suppression, while disruption of protective rhizobacteria can increase the incidence of disease. Artificial disruption of Gram-positive bacteria in rhizosphere soil resulted in higher occurrence of bacterial wilt in tomatoes. Identification of specific Gram-positive bacteria species in healthy rhizosphere soil contributed to plant immunity activation and enhanced plant disease resistance.

No Endospore Formation Confirmed in Members of the Phylum Proteobacteria

Polina Beskrovnaya et al.

Summary: Endospore formation was not confirmed in Rhodobacter johrii and Serratia marcescens, with phase-bright structures identified as triacylglycerol storage granules and cellular debris aggregates, respectively. This study concludes that endospore formation remains exclusive to the phylum Firmicutes.

Comparison of soil microbial responses to nitrogen addition between ex-arable grassland and natural grassland

Chengcheng Dong et al.

Summary: Our study found differences in soil microbial biomass, community composition, and extracellular enzyme activity between ex-arable land and natural grasslands due to varying soil moisture levels. The responses of soil microbes to nitrogen (N) addition differed between the two land use types, influenced by the different available N concentrations in the soil post-N addition. Land use change had direct and indirect effects on soil microbes via regulating the effects of N addition.

Microbial deterioration and restoration in greenhouse-based intensive vegetable production systems

Weishou Shen et al.

Summary: Soil microbial community and diversity are crucial for sustaining soil ecosystem health, but they are threatened by excessive use of synthetic fertilizers and continuous monocropping. This leads to decreased N utilization efficiency and more soil-borne plant diseases in greenhouse-based vegetable systems. Measures like rational fertilization, rotation or intercropping, and cultivating cover crops are important for restoring soil microbial communities and improving ecosystem health.

The inhibitory effects of different types of Brassica seed meals on the virulence of Ralstonia solanacearum

Junwei Peng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the inhibitory effects of different Brassica seed meals on the pathogen Ralstonia solanacearum and bacterial wilt in tomatoes. It was found that Brassica juncea seed meal exhibited the best inhibiting effects, while the combined seed meal of Brassica campestris and Brassica juncea showed synergic toxicity against R. solanacearum. Additionally, volatile compounds from Brassica campestris and Brassica juncea were identified as the predominant antibacterial compounds. Pot experiments confirmed that Brassica juncea seed meal and the combined seed meal were highly effective in controlling tomato wilt. The study provides insights into the mechanisms of Brassica seed meal suppression of pathogens and plant disease.
