A review on evolution of emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants based on spike glycoprotein

Nimisha Ghosh et al.

Summary: Since December 2019, numerous variants of SARS-CoV-2 have emerged, some of which have led to changes in the virus's transmissibility and potential implications for diagnosis, therapeutics, and vaccines. The Spike glycoprotein mutations are of particular concern as they are the main target for neutralizing antibodies. This study analyzes 12 important variants, including the recently discovered Omicron variant, which have a total of 84 unique mutations in the Spike glycoprotein. Sequence alignment and phylogenetic analysis were performed on 77,681 SARS-CoV-2 genomes from 98 countries between January 2020 and July 2021. The characteristics and evolutionary patterns of these variants and their corresponding mutations are discussed, and the functional implications and structural stability of non-synonymous mutation points are evaluated.

Approaches towards fighting the COVID-19 pandemic (Review)

Shih-Chang Tsai et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 outbreak has caused millions of infections and deaths worldwide, with efforts focused on developing diagnostic tools, drugs, and vaccines for treatment and prevention. Traditional Chinese medicine is also being explored in managing the pandemic. It is expected that new antiviral agents, vaccines, or combination therapies will be developed and implemented in 2021.

Antiviral drugs arbidol and interferon alpha-1b contribute to reducing the severity of COVID-19 patients: a retrospective cohort study

Peng Yin et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the role of antiviral drugs in reducing the severity of illness in patients with moderate COVID-19 pneumonia. The use of arbidol and interferon alpha-1b was associated with lower severity rates, while early use of arbidol within 7 days of symptom onset reduced patients' recovery time.
