Use of digital displays and ocular surface alterations: A review

Cristian Talens-Estarelles et al.

Summary: The use of digital displays is linked to an increase in dry eye symptoms, including abnormal blinking, incomplete eyelid closure, increased palpebral fissure, and meibomian gland dysfunction, leading to reductions in tear volume and stability, and significant ocular surface damage.

Curcumin Metabolite Tetrahydrocurcumin in the Treatment of Eye Diseases

Yu-Wen Kao et al.

Summary: Curcumin, a valuable natural product with pharmacological activities, has low bioavailability, leading to challenges in its medicinal use. Recent studies focus on curcumin metabolites, particularly tetrahydrocurcumin (THC), and their potential protective effects against eye diseases. Further research is needed to explore the clinical application of curcumin in ophthalmic conditions.

The role of curcumin in aging and senescence: Molecular mechanisms

Aliabbas Zia et al.

Summary: Healthy aging and human longevity are complex phenotypes affected by both environmental and genetic factors, with diet and caloric restriction playing crucial roles. Curcumin, a polyphenolic compound from Curcuma longa, has anti-aging properties and has been shown to extend the lifespan of aging model organisms. Its biological activities include antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, chemopreventive, and anti-neurodegenerative characteristics, with mechanisms involving modulation of major signaling pathways influencing longevity, such as IIS, mTOR, PKA, and FOXO signaling pathways.

The Role of Oxidative Stress and Autophagy in Blue-Light-Induced Damage to the Retinal Pigment Epithelium in Zebrafish In Vitro and In Vivo

Kai-Chun Cheng et al.

Summary: The study revealed that blue light exposure leads to decreased cell proliferation, increased apoptosis, oxidative stress, DNA damage activation, and autophagy in age-related macular degeneration. Zebrafish larvae model demonstrated the unfavorable impact of blue light on retinal tissue development. RNA-Seq results confirmed that blue light induced cell death and participated in tissue growth inhibition and maturation.

Curcumin Has Protective Effect on the Eye Lens Against Arsenic Toxicity

Bimal Prasanna Mohanty et al.

Summary: The study suggests that arsenic exposure reduces the gene expression of α and β-crystallins in the eye lens and curcumin can mitigate this effect. Furthermore, the fatty acid profile remains unchanged in the group fed with curcumin-supplemented diet and exposed to arsenic, indicating the protective effect of curcumin against arsenic toxicity.
