Prelimbic cortex neural encoding dynamically tracks expected outcome value

Mark Niedringhaus et al.

Summary: Animals need to modify their behavior based on changing environments and updated expected outcomes. Prelimbic cortex (PrL) neural encoding predicts and influences behavior alteration based on new expected outcome values. Our study investigated how PrL neural activity encodes reward predictive cues after a decrease in expected outcome value due to conditioned taste aversion. The results showed that PrL neural encoding of cues associated with devalued rewards predicted the ability to suppress behavior in the extinction test session but not in the reexposure test session. Differential patterns of PrL neural encoding were found between rats that avoided the devalued outcome and rats that continued to consume it. These findings suggest that PrL neural encoding dynamically tracks expected outcome values and may contribute to distinct behavioral phenotypes.

On the early life origins of vulnerability to opioid addiction

Sophia C. Levis et al.

Summary: The research reveals that early life adversity (ELA) can significantly impact the behavior of rats, leading to addiction-like phenotypes, indicating that ELA may affect brain development and function, increasing vulnerability to addiction. These findings offer insights into the origins and nature of reward circuit malfunction that may set the stage for addiction.

Effects of optogenetic photoexcitation of infralimbic cortex inputs to the basolateral amygdala on conditioned fear and extinction

Olena Bukalo et al.

Summary: The study investigates the role of the infralimbic cortex to basolateral amygdala pathway in fear extinction, finding that optogenetic stimulation of IL neurons projecting to BLA at different titers produces varying effects on extinction memory formation and fear suppression. This highlights the importance of the IL -> BLA pathway in fear regulation and emphasizes methodological factors in optogenetic studies of neural circuits underlying behavior.

Elevated fear responses to threatening cues in rats with early life stress is associated with greater excitability and loss of gamma oscillations in ventral-medial prefrontal cortex

Florencia M. Bercum et al.

Summary: Stress experienced early in development can disrupt prefrontal cortical areas, leading to alterations in fear regulation in adulthood. Rats with early life stress (ELS) show increased fear-related suppression and alterations in neural responses in the ventral medial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) during conditioned suppression tasks.

Reduced risk-taking behavior during frontal oscillatory theta band neurostimulation

Aline M. Dantas et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated the functional relevance of prefrontal theta oscillatory activity in regulating risk-taking behavior through noninvasive brain stimulation. Specifically, theta band stimulation led to a significant reduction in risk-taking behavior, increased response times, and decreased sensitivity to reward values. EEG data analysis did not show offline increase in power in the stimulated frequencies, suggesting a direct empirical evidence for the effects of prefrontal theta band stimulation on behavioral risk-taking regulation.

Impact of Early Life Stress on Reward Circuit Function and Regulation

Jamie L. Hanson et al.

Summary: Early life stress increases the risk of mood, anxiety, and substance use disorders throughout one's lifetime, mainly through changes in motivation and reward processing in the reward circuit. Research indicates that early life stress impacts the structure and function of the reward circuit.
