Tolerances of Apple Maggot (Diptera:Tephritidae) Larvae and Different Age Puparia to Water Flotation and Immersion

Wee L. Yee

Summary: The study found that apple maggot flies sink in water and larvae suffered higher mortality after being submerged for 1-2 days than control larvae. Young puparia are more likely to float in water than older puparia, and young puparia had higher mortality rates after immersion in water for 1-12 days, while older puparia were not affected. These results suggest that tolerance to water immersion increases rapidly after puparia formation.

The effect of submersion in different types of water on the survival and eclosion of blow-fly intra-puparial forms (Diptera: Calliphoridae)

Paola A. Magni et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of submersion in different water types on the survival rate and eclosion time of blow-fly intra-puparial forms. Results show that the survival rate is highest in tap water, and younger and older intra-puparial forms have higher survival rates compared to medium forms. The age of the intra-puparial forms and water type affect the eclosion time.

A review of Madagopsina Feijen, Feijen & Feijen (Diptera, Diopsidae) with description of a new species, key to the species, and discussion of intrageneric relationships

Hans R. Feijen et al.

Summary: This study describes a new species, Madagopsina makayensis, from Madagascar, belonging to the recently established genus Madagopsina (Diopsidae, stalk-eyed flies). The paper provides a concise catalogue and an identification key for the genus, as well as discussing intrageneric relations based on morphology and allometric data. The new species is placed in the M. apollo species group with Madagopsina parvapollina as its closest relative, and new records are presented for other species in the genus.

Water immersion tolerance by larval instars of stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans, L1758 (Diptera: Muscidae) impairs the fitness performance of their subsequent stages

Steve B. S. Baleba

Summary: The tolerance of stable fly larvae to water immersion decreases with larval instar, and the developmental time, weight, pupation percentage, adult emergence percentage, and adult weight of survivors are negatively impacted. Specifically, adults developed from first larval instars show better resilience to water immersion stress compared to those developed from second and third larval instars.
