High-speed imaging of magnetized plasmas: When electron temperature matters

Simon Vincent et al.

Summary: This article systematically compares high-speed camera imaging with simultaneous measurements of plasma parameters, showing that light intensity cannot be interpreted as a proxy for plasma density and that electron temperature cannot be ignored in interpreting high-speed imaging. The features of plasma parameter fluctuations are investigated, and an excellent match is found with an Arrhenius law functional form. These results explain the discrepancies in previous literature regarding ion saturation current and narrow-band imaging measurements.

Observation of rotating magnetohydrodynamic modes in the plume of a high-current hollow cathode

Giulia Becatti et al.

Summary: This study investigated the plasma oscillations in the exterior region of a high-current hollow cathode operating at 25-150A, revealing the presence of a coherent magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) azimuthal mode with a fundamental frequency of 58kHz, characterized by helical kink instability. The frequency, wavenumber, and onset of this mode were well predicted by ideal MHD theory, considering the boundary condition of a non-line-tying cylindrical anode. Additional features of resistive MHD modes were observed at relatively low discharge currents, indicating the presence of anomalous resistivity in the cathode plume.

Characterization of hollow cathode plasma turbulence using coherent Thomson scattering

S. Tsikata et al.

Summary: This study successfully identified and characterized MHz-frequency ion acoustic turbulence and kHz-frequency oscillations using coherent Thomson scattering. Various unstable modes, including a directive ion acoustic mode with unique energy scaling, were observed in the presence of a background magnetic field. The results highlight the diversity of wave types in hollow cathode plumes and emphasize the significant role played by the presence and configuration of the magnetic field.

Simulations of ion heating due to ion-acoustic instabilities in presheaths

Lucas P. Beving et al.

Summary: Particle-in-cell and direct simulation Monte Carlo simulations show that ion-acoustic instabilities can result in significant ion heating in the presheath region. When the electron-to-ion temperature ratio exceeds a certain threshold, ion heating is observed near the sheath edge due to the rapid temperature equilibration rate between ions and electrons. This ion-acoustic wave heating mechanism is found to decrease at higher neutral pressures, where ion-neutral collisions damp the waves and ion heating is instead dominated by inelastic collisions in the presheath.

Rare Event-Triggered Transitions in Aerodynamic Bifurcation

Ariane Gayout et al.

Summary: The transitions between two states of a bistable system were studied experimentally, showing that the waiting times follow a double exponential distribution. The rare events of aerodynamic forces control the transitions in a disk pendulum, linking them to vortex shedding-induced fluctuations. This work has significant fundamental outcomes for the study of rare events in out-of-equilibrium systems.

Triggered Ion-acoustic Waves in the Solar Wind

F. S. Mozer et al.

Summary: Continuous narrowband electrostatic emissions were observed near 20 solar radii on the Parker Solar Probe, displaying shock-like envelopes and repetitive wave packets with a rate of approximately 1.5 Hz. These emissions, correlated with low-frequency electromagnetic fluctuations, were interpreted as ion-acoustic waves with a velocity estimate of about 100 km s(-1). This observation represents a new regime of instability and evolution of oblique ion-acoustic waves not previously reported in theory or experiment.

Rotation and shear control of a weakly magnetized plasma column using current injection by emissive electrodes

Victor Desangles et al.

Summary: The experimental investigation focuses on the radial evolution of rotation in a weakly magnetized plasma column at low pressure with a strong electron current injected from large emissive cathodes. Through radial scans of ion velocity, it is shown that control of the rotation profile can be achieved by manipulating the spatial configuration of the emissive cathodes. The rotation profile is determined by electric drift velocity and damped by ion drag, with its evolution influenced by changes in plasma potential profile due to the presence of strongly emissive cathodes.
