Burning plasma achieved in inertial fusion

A. B. Zylstra et al.

Summary: A burning-plasma state has been achieved in the laboratory using a laser facility to generate X-rays and compress and heat a fuel-containing capsule. Experiments show fusion self-heating exceeding the mechanical work input, and a subset of experiments appear to have crossed the static self-heating boundary, providing an opportunity to study α-particle-dominated plasmas and burning-plasma physics.

Design of inertial fusion implosions reaching the burning plasma regime

A. L. Kritcher et al.

Summary: Burning plasma state has been achieved at the US National Ignition Facility using indirect-drive inertial-confinement fusion. More efficient hohlraums and improved symmetry control have allowed for effective heating by alpha particles from fuel fusion reactions. This is significant for the progress of inertial-confinement fusion.

A mechanism for reduced compression in indirectly driven layered capsule implosions

Brian M. Haines et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of interfacial mixing and material jetting on fuel layer compression in high-yield implosions on the National Ignition Facility. The results show that weak spots in the shell prevent uniform compression of the fuel layer, while defects on interior interfaces and interfacial mixing between ablator and fuel also decrease compression. This research provides insights into the mechanisms behind persistently overestimated fuel compression in design simulations.

Instability seeding mechanisms due to internal defects in inertial confinement fusion targets

S. C. Miller et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the performance degradation in laser-driven inertial confinement fusion implosions. The causes of the degradation include Rayleigh-Taylor instability growth. Defects in the target lead to instability seeds and impact the shell integrity and mass injection. The early-time behavior of single-mode shell mass modulations and isolated voids is analyzed, and the growth of localized perturbations is studied in relation to defect placement and size.

Turbulence generation by shock interaction with a highly nonuniform medium

Seth Davidovits et al.

Summary: This study investigates the phenomenon of an initially planar shock wave propagating into a medium of nonuniform density through numerical simulations. The results show that highly nonuniform density and strong shocks result in perturbations and turbulent flow. The analysis reveals that the properties of postshock turbulence are influenced by the initial density configuration and shock drive.

A polar direct drive liquid deuterium-tritium wetted foam target concept for inertial confinement fusion

R. E. Olson et al.

Summary: A new approach to inertial confinement fusion (ICF) called polar direct drive and liquid deuterium-tritium wetted foam capsules is proposed for potentially achieving ignition and propagating thermonuclear burn at the National Ignition Facility (NIF). Simulations show that ICF ignition and burn could be possible with the current laser power and energy capabilities available on the NIF.

Entropy generation from hydrodynamic mixing in inertial confinement fusion indirect-drive targets

Peter Amendt

Summary: The increase in entropy from the physical mixing of materials in inertial confinement fusion and gas-filled hohlraums is assessed. This mix-driven entropy generation leads to less compression of the composite ICF fluid under adiabatic conditions. The heat generation from the entropy increase can be significant in experiments conducted at the National Ignition Facility.
