Nonlinear electrohydrodynamic ion transport in graphene nanopores

Xiaowei Jiang et al.

Summary: This study reports on pressure-modulated ion conduction in graphene nanopores featuring nonlinear electrohydrodynamic coupling. Experimental observations show an increase in ion conduction induced by pressure, which was not predicted by the classical linear coupling model. Computational and theoretical studies reveal that this pressure sensitivity arises from the transport of capacitively accumulated ions near the graphene surface.

Pressure-sensitive ion conduction in a conical channel: Optimal pressure and geometry

Willem Q. Boon et al.

Summary: This study theoretically investigates the electric conductivity of a conical channel, which exhibits strong non-linear pressure dependence. The mechanosensitive diodic behavior arises from the pressure-sensitive accumulation or depletion of salt in the pore. The optimal diodic behavior depends on the flow rate, with the ideal tip-to-base radii ratio being 0.22 at zero-flow. An optimal diode is obtained at zero-flow by applying a pressure drop proportional to the applied potential and the inverse square of the tip radius, countering electro-osmotic flow.

Electrostatic gating of ion transport in carbon nanotube porins: A modeling study

Yun-Chiao Yao et al.

Summary: Carbon nanotube porins demonstrate excellent biocompatibility and unique water and ion transport properties. Gating transport with external voltage increases control over ion flow and selectivity. The optimal gated CNTP device consists of a semiconducting CNTP inserted into a small membrane patch containing an internally conductive layer.

Electro-osmotic diode based on colloidal nano-valves between double membranes

Shihori Koyama et al.

Summary: The study proposes a simple electro-osmotic diode by containing colloidal particles between membranes with different pore densities, showing nonlinear dependence on the electric field for both the electric current and electro-osmotic flow. A mathematical model is constructed to reproduce the diode behavior, with potential applications in downsized microfluidic pumps induced under AC electric fields.
