Numerical Investigations of Wake Expansion in the Offshore Wind Farm Using a Large Eddy Simulation

Mingqiu Liu et al.

Summary: Offshore wind farms have been developed worldwide due to abundant wind resources and land saving. This study focuses on the wake of wind turbines, analyzing the growth and expansion of the wake in offshore wind farms. The large eddy simulation is used to investigate different operating conditions, and two formulae are proposed to calculate the wake growth rate. The simulation results show that a smaller lateral distance between turbines leads to less wake expansion.

Numerical Investigation on the Effects of Forest Heterogeneity on Wind-Turbine Wake

Taiwo Adedipe et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the effects of forest heterogeneity on wind-turbine wake formation and recovery under a neutrally stratified condition. Numerical simulations of three types of forests, homogeneous, real (with natural heterogeneity), and idealized (with strong heterogeneity), were conducted using the Actuator Line Model approach. Results show that the heterogeneity levels and densities of forests have significant impacts on the turbulent kinetic energy of the wake region.

A new wake-merging method for wind-farm power prediction in the presence of heterogeneous background velocity fields

Luca Lanzilao et al.

Summary: This study addresses the issue of flow heterogeneities in wake models and develops a new wake-merging method to superimpose wakes on a heterogeneous background velocity field. The new method demonstrates higher accuracy when dealing with spatially varying background velocities, especially when coupled with double-Gaussian and Gaussian single-wake models.

Analytical solution for the cumulative wake of wind turbines in wind farms

Majid Bastankhah et al.

Summary: This paper presents an approximate solution for the conservation of mass and momentum in wind turbine arrays, providing a simple explicit relationship for predicting streamwise velocity distribution. Large-eddy simulations are used to examine self-similarity and the validity of the conservation of momentum deficit, with a modified version proposed for improved results. The model is able to predict flow distributions in moderately sized wind farms and provides insights on the accuracy of common wake superposition methods.

Advancement of an analytical double-Gaussian full wind turbine wake model

Aidan Keane

Summary: The recently proposed analytical wake model for a horizontal axis utility scale wind turbine is revisited, revised and improved based on conservation of momentum and the assumption of a double-Gaussian distribution for the velocity deficit in the wake. The model fitting using lidar wake measurement data reveals characteristics of the wind turbine wake, potentially facilitating analytic calculations and improving understanding of wind turbine aerodynamics.

Local topography-induced pressure gradient effects on the wake and power output of a model wind turbine

Tengfei Cai et al.

Summary: Wind-tunnel experiments were conducted to investigate the impact of favorable and adverse constant pressure gradients on the flow field downstream of a model wind turbine. Results showed that the pressure gradients induced wake deflection and modulation, significantly affecting the overall flow recovery.

Design and analysis of a wake model for spatially heterogeneous flow

Alayna Farrell et al.

Summary: Methods of turbine wake modeling are being developed to account for spatially variant atmospheric conditions within wind farms. The FLORIS model has been adapted to incorporate spatial heterogeneity in flow-field characterization, resulting in improved accuracy of power prediction. Comparative studies demonstrate a decrease in mean absolute error for wind farm power output predictions, suggesting potential benefits of the proposed modeling techniques under varying site-specific conditions.
