Single-pulse phase-contrast imaging at free-electron lasers in the hard X-ray regime

Johannes Hagemann et al.

Summary: X-ray free-electron lasers have enabled unprecedented opportunities for time-resolved nano-scale imaging. Near-field holography in cone-beam geometry provides full-field views of specimen dynamics captured by single XFEL pulses. A concept is presented to address fluctuating illumination wavefronts by sampling SASE pulses and implementing principal component analysis. This scheme has been successfully implemented at the European XFEL's MID instrument for time-resolved imaging.

Summary: The Materials Imaging and Dynamics (MID) instrument at the European X-ray Free-Electron Laser (EuXFEL) facility aims to enable studies of nanostructured materials, liquids, and soft- and hard-condensed matter using bright X-ray beams. The first experiments were performed in 2019.

Nanosecond timing and synchronization scheme for holographic pump-probe studies at the MID instrument at European XFEL

Markus Osterhoff et al.

Summary: A new holographic imaging scheme has been successfully implemented at the XFEL, providing insights into fast phenomena such as laser-driven cavitation bubbles. The synchronization and timing precision were found to be better than 1 ns in this study.

Pump-probe X-ray holographic imaging of laser-induced cavitation bubbles with femtosecond FEL pulses

Summary: The X-ray holography technique allows high-resolution structural probing of cavitation bubbles, but current optical methods face limitations in quantifying early states. The study demonstrates the expansion of cavitation bubbles shortly after seeding, comparing the results with numerical simulations and revealing the nonlinear characteristics of liquid phase bubbles.
