Comparison of interface capturing methods for the simulation of two-phase flow in a unified low-Mach framework

Victor Boniou et al.

Summary: This paper compares four popular interface capturing methods: volume of fluid (VOF), standard level set (SLS), accurate conservative level set (ACLS), and coupled level set and volume of fluid (CLSVOF). All methods are able to provide reasonable results in a unified low-Mach framework, but each method has its own weaknesses and strengths. By comparing the metrics of geometrical accuracy, mass and momentum conservation, it is concluded that CLSVOF is the most promising method for two-phase flow simulations in the specific framework.

An adaptive coupled volume-of-fluid and level set method based on unstructured grids

An Liu et al.

Summary: The study introduces an adaptive coupled volume-of-fluid and level set (VOSET) method based on unstructured grids for simulating incompressible interfacial flows. Through validation with four classical test cases, it is found that the adaptive VOSET algorithm enhances accuracy near the interface, particularly in capturing curvature and surface tension, while also improving computational efficiency by significantly reducing the number of grid cells.Comparatively, the adaptive VOSET requires only 4.85%-24.5% of the number of adaptive grid cells and 5.31%-15.93% of the computational time compared to fixed unstructured grid cells, demonstrating outstanding properties in terms of time and computational cost savings.

Quasi-equilibrium evaporation characteristics of oxygen in the liquid-vapor interfacial region

Zhongqi Zuo et al.

Summary: Evaporation is a vital non-equilibrium phenomenon with applications in various phase transition systems. The study designed a visualized and controlled evaporation system using liquid oxygen as the testing fluid, revealing temperature discontinuities and overheating in the evaporating process. The findings suggest existing evaporation theories may lose accuracy in predicting mass flux and temperature jump at cryogenic temperatures.

Thin-film evolution and fingering instability of self-rewetting films flowing down an inclined plane

Chicheng Ma et al.

Summary: This paper explores the flow instability of a self-rewetting fluid on an inclined plane, revealing the unique surface tension properties at different temperatures. Through mathematical modeling, the evolution equation for the liquid film is derived, and the stability of the flow at various temperatures is comprehensively discussed and analyzed. The results demonstrate the significant impact of factors such as inclined angle, Weber number, Marangoni effect, and Biot number on the flow stability, with a transition from enhanced instability to increased stability as the temperature difference changes.
