Qian Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a radial strut is designed to improve the mixing in a trapped vortex combustor (TVC) and a passive control strategy is proposed to restrain the mainstream flow into the cavity. Experimental and simulation results demonstrate that the proposed strategy significantly improves the ignition and blowout performance by effectively restraining the mainstream air entrained in the cavity.

Jie Zhang et al.

Summary: Ground ignition and high-altitude ignition are important performance indexes of a combustor. In this study, an internally-staged combustor and five pilot-stage centrifugal atomizers with engineering scale were developed, and their flow characteristics and ignition performance were studied. The results showed that the combustor relative air pressure drop and pilot-stage flow number had an impact on the ignition performance.

Large-eddy simulations of self-excited thermoacoustic instability in a premixed swirling combustor with an outlet nozzle

Yuze Sun et al.

Summary: This study explores the generation and mitigation mechanisms of self-excited pulsating oscillations in combustion systems with reduced greenhouse gases and nitrogen oxides emissions. Numerical simulations and physical analysis suggest that the use of an outlet nozzle can attenuate fuel fraction fluctuations, process vortices, and modify the temperature field, thus reducing the adverse effects of pulsating combustion.

Investigation of flame structure and precessing vortex core instability of a gas turbine model combustor with different swirler configurations

Amir Mardani et al.

Summary: This study conducts numerical simulations on a dual-swirl gas turbine model combustor using a three-dimensional unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes approach. The objective is to analyze the ignition process and flame structure by studying the radicals involved, as well as investigate the flow field under different injector configurations. The results show good agreement with experimental data for velocity and temperature profiles. It is found that the build-up process of certain compounds and the balance between certain molecules play important roles in combustion initiation and flame formation.

Experimental investigation on the ignition dynamics of an annular combustor with multiple centrally staged swirling burners

Hui Wang et al.

Summary: The ignition behaviors of an annular combustor consisting of 16 centrally staged swirling burners are experimentally investigated in this work. The research focuses on the light-round mechanism of burner-burner flame propagation. The swirling flow structure of the staged burner and the flow interaction between multiple burners in the annular combustor are well measured. The light-round time decreases gradually with increasing equivalence ratio. A more complicated sawtooth pattern of flame propagation is discovered during the burner to burner flame propagation, compared to that with non-staged burners. The trajectories of the flame leading points are moving in a zigzag pattern during the light-round process. The circumferential flame speeds of the clockwise flame front are constantly faster than the anti-clockwise one, and this difference increases with larger equivalence ratio. These characteristics are very different from those in an annular combustor with non-staged burners.

Summary: The ignition performance and flame kernel propagation in a gas turbine model combustor are studied to analyze the influence of spark location on ignition performance. The study finds that the best ignition location is near the inner boundary of the recirculation zone. The trajectory of the flame kernel propagation is mainly controlled by the non-reacting flow field and fuel concentration.
