Influence of pore space heterogeneity on mineral dissolution and permeability evolution investigated using lattice Boltzmann method

Yutian Zhang et al.

Summary: The influence of pore space heterogeneity on mineral dissolution and permeability evolution in porous media was investigated using a numerical approach. It was found that dissolution patterns strongly depended on pore heterogeneity at high Pe and Da numbers. Additionally, six dissolution regimes and four porosity-permeability relationship types were observed in the simulations.

Summary: This study introduces a benchmark problem for evaluating the simulation of single-phase flow, reactive transport, and solid geometry evolution at the pore scale. By comparing results from five different codes, it demonstrates significant agreement both quantitatively and qualitatively, providing a strong benchmark for validating and testing pore-scale codes.

Coupled dissolution-precipitation reactions as a potential method for mitigating contaminant transport in carbonate aquifers

Anat Cohen et al.

Summary: The study found that injecting oxalic acid in calcareous aquifers can reduce water discharge and decrease flow velocity through precipitation and reduction of intergranular voids. Therefore, coupled dissolution-precipitation reactions could be a promising method for deploying subsurface barriers in aquifers.

A physics-informed and hierarchically regularized data-driven model for predicting fluid flow through porous media

Kun Wang et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a new deep learning data-driven model for predicting structure dependent pore-fluid velocity fields in rock, which innovatively decomposes the porous media domain, embeds physics knowledge, and regularizes training with a hierarchical loss function. The model demonstrates improved accuracy and generalizability, along with orders of magnitude speed-ups in computation time, serving as a surrogate for direct numerical simulations.

Machine learning and data-driven characterization framework for porous materials: Permeability prediction and channeling defect detection

Tomoki Yasuda et al.

Summary: This study proposes a machine learning and data-driven framework to identify the optimal descriptor subset for advanced characterization and accurate performance prediction of porous materials in a given application. Two methods were used for descriptor selection and 154 descriptors were evaluated through CFD simulations. The framework identified 11 descriptors and achieved more accurate prediction of permeability compared to existing correlations.

Lattice Boltzmann study of porosity-permeability variation in different regimes of non-isothermal dissolution in porous media

Mohammad Taahodi et al.

Summary: Characterizing the process of dissolution in porous media by thermally energized reactants is important for geothermal science and the petroleum industry. The study investigates reactive flow of a non-isothermal solvent in a complex porous medium at pore scale and analyzes the evolution of permeability values with dissolution advancement. The effects of different dimensionless numbers on morphology, including Arrhenius number, temperature ratio, Peclet, and Damkohler, are explored and presented in porosity-permeability diagrams for each regime.
