Forecasting of Built-Up Land Expansion in a Desert Urban Environment

Shawky Mansour et al.

Summary: In recent years, socioeconomic transformation and social modernisation have led to the expansion of urban settlements in the Gulf Cooperation Council states, including desert cities. However, the prediction and research of desert urban patterns have been lacking, and this study focuses on the land use-land cover changes in the desert city of Ibri in Oman. The results show that the observed changes were rapid, with desert, bare land, and vegetation transforming into built-up areas. The forecast predicts a significant increase in land conversion from desert to urban in the next two decades.

Characterizing Spatiotemporal Variations in the Urban Thermal Environment Related to Land Cover Changes in Karachi, Pakistan, from 2000 to 2020

Muhammad Fahad Baqa et al.

Summary: This study explored the impact of land use/land cover changes on the urban thermal environment in the tropical megacity, Karachi, Pakistan. The results indicated that the increase in built-up areas led to higher land surface temperatures, and different land cover types exhibited varying degrees of heat island effects. The normalized difference built-up index had a significant influence on land surface temperature. Large parks with medium- and high-density vegetation played a crucial role in regulating the thermal environment.

A Detailed Ecological Exploration of the Distribution Patterns of Wild Poaceae from the Jhelum District (Punjab), Pakistan

Muhammad Majeed et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to investigate the taxonomic diversity, richness, and distribution patterns of Poaceae in the Jhelum district of the Pakistan Himalayas. The study found 52 Poaceae species in the area, with 45 native species and 7 invasive species. The leaf size spectra of grasses were dominated by microphylls and nanophylls. The study also revealed that environmental factors had a significant impact on vegetation associations.

Spatiotemporal Distribution Patterns of Climbers along an Abiotic Gradient in Jhelum District, Punjab, Pakistan

Muhammad Majeed et al.

Summary: This study examined the taxonomic diversity, richness, and distribution patterns of climber communities in the western Himalayas and investigated the influence of abiotic factors on their distributions. The results revealed that abiotic factors significantly affected the distribution patterns and structures of climber communities. These findings are essential for understanding the biological, ecological, and economic value of climbers and for forest management and ecological restoration in the Himalayas.

Comparative analysis of machine learning and multi-criteria decision making techniques for landslide susceptibility mapping of Muzaffarabad district

Umer Khalil et al.

Summary: This study compares the performance of machine learning and multi-criteria decision-making methods in landslide susceptibility mapping and provides additional insights into landslide-inducing factors. The results show that support vector machine and analytical hierarchy process perform better. Slope, precipitation, elevation, lithology, NDWI, and flow direction are ranked as the most important landslide-inducing factors.

Modeling and Predicting Land Use Land Cover Spatiotemporal Changes: A Case Study in Chalus Watershed, Iran

Sepideh Jalayer et al.

Summary: This study detected the temporal and spatial changes in land use and land cover patterns in the Chalus watershed over the last two decades using multitemporal Landsat images and predicted future changes for the year 2040. The findings revealed a significant increase in agricultural land and barren area, and a sharp decline in grassland and forest cover. The model predicted a continued decrease in forest cover and an expansion of barren area, agricultural land, and built-up area by 2040. Understanding the spatiotemporal dynamics of land use and land cover change is crucial in minimizing destructive consequences.

Multiscale Dual-Branch Residual Spectral-Spatial Network With Attention for Hyperspectral Image Classification

Saeed Ghaderizadeh et al.

Summary: The development of remote sensing images has allowed for the identification of materials in inaccessible environments and the study of natural materials on a large scale. This article proposes a multiscale dual-branch residual spectral-spatial network with attention (MDBRSSN) to improve the accuracy of hyperspectral image (HSI) classification, particularly when training samples are limited. The MDBRSSN model achieves high classification accuracy when compared to state-of-the-art methods, as demonstrated in the experiments conducted on four datasets.

Forest fire monitoring using spatial-statistical and Geo-spatial analysis of factors determining forest fire in Margalla Hills, Islamabad, Pakistan

Aqil Tariq et al.

Summary: This study aims to analyze the spatial patterns of forest fire danger in Margalla Hills, Islamabad, Pakistan. The research focused on burnt areas, using Landsat data to classify the severity of forest fires based on various parameters. The results showed a correlation between forest density, distance to roads, maximum temperature, wind speed, and fire severity levels. Prediction maps indicated a distribution of forests in different severity levels.
