Magnetic monopole density and antiferromagnetic domain control in spin-ice iridates

M. J. Pearce et al.

Summary: Magnetically frustrated systems exhibit complex behavior such as emergent symmetries, topological properties, and exotic excitations, with the reliable experimental indicator of the density of magnetic monopoles remaining elusive despite extensive research. This study demonstrates a strong coupling between monopoles on the holmium sublattice and antiferromagnetically ordered iridium ions, paving the way for a quantitative experimental measure of monopole density. Furthermore, the research showcases the ability to control antiferromagnetic domain walls using a uniform external magnetic field, a crucial step towards enhancing future spintronic device design.

Probing Flat Band Physics in Spin Ice Systems via Polarized Neutron Scattering

K. T. K. Chung et al.

Summary: This Letter demonstrates the use of polarized neutron scattering to isolate spin-spin correlations in a frustrated magnetic system with a classical spin liquid phase. The study shows that the non-spin-flip polarized neutron scattering is highly sensitive to correlations induced by weak perturbations in systems with flat bands. Experimental results from the dipolar spin ice compound Ho2Ti2O7 are used to support the findings.

Spin-ice physics in cadmium cyanide

Chloe S. Coates et al.

Summary: Spin-ices are frustrated magnets that exhibit emergent physics at low temperatures, typically around 1-5K. However, non-magnetic cadmium cyanide (Cd(CN)2) shows similar behavior to magnetic spin-ices at a much higher temperature scale, with electric dipole moments of cyanide ions playing the role of magnetic pseudospins. This demonstrates that spin-ice physics can be observed in systems of frustrated electric dipoles, even at room temperature.

Topological Route to New and Unusual Coulomb Spin Liquids

Owen Benton et al.

Summary: By varying the constraints on a classical spin system, a series of distinct Coulomb liquids can be generated, leading to higher-rank spin liquids and new Coulomb liquids with an abundance of pinch points. This manipulation of topological defects in momentum space establishes a new and general route to uncovering exotic Coulomb liquids.
