Nonadiabatic Topological Energy Pumps with Quasiperiodic Driving

David M. Long et al.

Summary: We provide a topological classification of the steady states of d-dimensional lattice models driven by D incommensurate tones, revealing anomalous localized topological phases (ALTPs) in frequency space. The observable signatures of each ALTP depend on the spatial dimension, while the formal classification is determined by d + D. By identifying quantized circulating currents and topological edge states, we have designed concrete models of quasiperiodically driven qubits and wires that achieve ALTPs of several topological classes, offering a route to experimentally access higher dimensional ALTPs in low-dimensional systems.

Spectral properties of three-dimensional Anderson model

J. Suntajs et al.

Summary: The study compares the level sensitivity statistics and level statistics in the Anderson model, defining two dimensionless conductance versions and finding remarkable similarities in their behavior around the localization transition. The properties of level curvatures and the spectral form factor at the critical point are also examined, with a focus on the level variance and compressibility. The scaling solution for the average level spacing ratio in the crossover regime is tested with a cost function minimization approach, showing high numerical accuracy in agreement with previous literature.

Fractional Corner Charge of Sodium Chloride

Haruki Watanabe et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown the relationship between nontrivial multipole moments in higher-order topological phases and the emergence of fractionally quantized charges at the boundary. A proposal for a three-dimensional octupole insulator with fractionally quantized corner charges has been put forth, using sodium chloride (table salt) as an example. The fractional quantization of the corner charge remains unaffected by quantum fluctuations, as supported by ab initio calculations, even in the presence of crystal defects.

Hierarchy of higher-order topological superconductors in three dimensions

Arnob Kumar Ghosh et al.

Summary: By introducing different types of perturbations in a three-dimensional model, a hierarchy of higher-order topological superconductor phases supporting Majorana hinge modes and Majorana corner modes can be realized. In practice, these higher-order modes exhibit specific transport signatures, and the manipulation of the number of different modes is possible by introducing bulk magnetic field.

N-band Hopf insulator

Bastien Lapierre et al.

Summary: The study generalizes the three-dimensional two-band Hopf insulator to many bands, finding the Z classification of an N-band Hopf insulator related to the quantized isotropic magnetoelectric coefficient of its bulk. Despite the nonuniqueness in dividing a finite system into bulk and boundary, it is discovered that the magnetoelectric coefficient of the bulk and the anomalous Hall conductivity of the boundary are quantized to the same integer value. An experiment is proposed to measure the quantized boundary effect in a nonequilibrium state.

Hierarchy of higher-order Floquet topological phases in three dimensions

Tanay Nag et al.

Summary: In this study, a hierarchy of higher-order Floquet topological phases in three dimensions is constructed by periodically driving static first-order topological phases with suitable discrete symmetry breaking Wilson-Dirac masses. Realizations of second-order and third-order Floquet topological states, supporting dynamic hinge and corner modes, respectively, are demonstrated by introducing one and two discrete symmetry breaking Wilson-Dirac mass(es). The resulting dynamic hinge and corner modes, protected by antiunitary spectral or particle-hole symmetries, live on boundaries with different codimensions.

Higher-order topological Anderson insulators

Yan-Bin Yang et al.

Summary: Disorder effects in a two-dimensional system with chiral symmetry can induce a quadrupole topological insulating phase, with topological properties defined by effective boundary Hamiltonians, the quadrupole moment, and zero-energy corner modes. The study also reveals gapped and gapless topological phases, as well as a Griffiths regime, where states at zero energy become multifractal. The self-consistent Born approximation is applied to show that the induced topological phase arises from disorder-renormalized masses.

Teleportation of Berry curvature on the surface of a Hopf insulator

A. Alexandradinata et al.

Summary: The paradigm of topological insulators states that an energy gap separates conduction and valence bands with opposite topological invariants. This study proposes that equal-energy bands with opposite Chern invariants can be spatially separated on the opposite facets of a finite crystalline Hopf insulator. The nontrivial boundary states arising from a generalized Weyl equation provide insights into the behavior of Berry curvature in this system.
