Searching for dark matter signals in timing spectra at neutrino experiments

Bhaskar Dutta et al.

Summary: The paper investigates a dark matter search strategy using timing and energy spectra to discriminate dark matter signals from neutrino signals at low-energy, pulsed-beam neutrino experiments. The strategy is applied to COHERENT, JSNS(2), and CCM experiments, which are sources of both neutrinos and photons. The results demonstrate that by employing a combination of energy and timing cuts, the search strategy can observe a mild excess of dark matter signals beyond known backgrounds in certain experiments.

Measurement of the Coherent Elastic Neutrino-Nucleus Scattering Cross Section on CsI by COHERENT

D. Akimov et al.

Summary: The cross section of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEvNS) was measured using a CsI[Na] scintillating crystal in a high flux of neutrinos. The COHERENT Collaboration achieved the most precise measurement of CEvNS yet, which is consistent with the standard model. The results placed leading constraints on neutrino nonstandard interactions and tested lepton flavor universality and weak mixing angle.

Measurement of scintillation response of CsI[Na] to low-energy nuclear recoils by COHERENT

C. O. H. E. R. E. N. T. Collaboration COHERENT Collaboration et al.

Summary: In this study, the COHERENT collaboration presented results of multiple measurements of CsI[Na] scintillation response to 3-60 keV energy nuclear recoils. The corrections for identified systematic effects were discussed and uncertainty values were updated, with an estimation of the impact on future precision tests of CEvNS. Potential systematic effects affecting each measurement were scrutinized, with confirmation of the linear response of the H11934-200 Hamamatsu photomultiplier tube used in the study.

Simulating the neutrino flux from the Spallation Neutron Source for the COHERENT experiment

D. Akimov et al.

Summary: This article introduces the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, which is a pulse neutron source and also generates pulse neutrinos as a by-product. The COHERENT collaboration uses this source to study coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering. The article discusses the Geant4 simulation of neutrino production at the SNS and the flux calculation, estimating the uncertainty of the calculation at around 10% based on validation against low-energy pi(+) production data.

First dark matter search results from Coherent CAPTAIN-Mills

A. A. Aguilar-Arevalo et al.

Summary: This paper describes the operation of the Coherent CAPTAIN-Mills (CCM) detector located at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The CCM detector is designed to search for sterile neutrinos and light dark matter. An engineering run was performed to study the characteristics of the CCM120 detector and exclude new parameter space in a leptophobic dark matter (DM) model. The lessons learned from this run have guided the development and construction of the new CCM200 detector that will begin operations in 2021 and improve on these searches.

First Measurement of Coherent Elastic Neutrino-Nucleus Scattering on Argon

D. Akimov et al.

Summary: We present the first measurement of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEvNS) on argon using a liquid argon detector at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Spallation Neutron Source. Two independent analyses support CEvNS over the background-only null hypothesis with more than 3 sigma significance. The measured cross section, averaged over the incident neutrino flux, is (2.2 +/- 0.7) x 10(-39) cm(2)-consistent with the standard model prediction, confirming the existence of the CEvNS process and providing improved constraints on nonstandard neutrino interactions.

Search for inelastic scattering of WIMP dark matter in XENON1T

E. Aprile et al.

Summary: In the XENON1T dark matter experiment, a search for the inelastic scattering of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) off Xe-129 was conducted. Despite using an exposure of 0.83 tonne-years, no evidence of inelastic WIMP scattering was found with a significance of more than 2 sigma. Upper limits on the cross section of WIMP-nucleus interactions were set, excluding new parameter space for WIMPs heavier than 100 GeV/c².
