Susceptibility of Orientationally Ordered Active Matter to Chirality Disorder

Bruno Ventejou et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the susceptibility of long-range ordered phases of two-dimensional dry aligning active matter to population disorder depends on system size and structural type, with homogeneous phases being more sensitive to disorder and inhomogeneous solutions being relatively stable.

Thermotaxis of Janus particles

Sven Auschra et al.

Summary: The interactions of autonomous microswimmers, such as Janus particles, and their role in the collective states of motile active matter were studied. Monitoring the dynamics of a single Janus particle in an external temperature field revealed orientation-dependent repulsion and alignment, explained by a theoretical model. The heterogeneity in heat conductivity of the particles breaks the apparent symmetry of the problem.

Chemotaxis of Cargo-Carrying Self-Propelled Particles

Hidde D. Vuijk et al.

Summary: Active particles, when bound to passive objects, exhibit chemotaxis and move towards regions of higher activity. Connecting active particles into chains can lead to a transition from antichemotaxis to chemotaxis, allowing protoforms of life to locate sources of nutrients without sensory-motor apparatus.

Metallic microswimmers driven up the wall by gravity

Quentin Brosseau et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that tail-heavy swimmers have a preference for upward orientation and ascending along inclined planes when propelled by autophoretic bimetallic nanorods in hydrogen peroxide fuel. The interaction with solid boundaries greatly facilitates this gravitaxis, allowing even extremely heavy microswimmers to climb nearly vertical surfaces. The theory and simulations suggest that the alignment of the rods is reinforced by a fore-aft drag asymmetry induced by hydrodynamic interactions with the wall.
