Room Temperature Deposition of Nanocrystalline SiC Thin Films by DCMS/HiPIMS Co-Sputtering Technique

Vasile Tiron et al.

Summary: Due to their outstanding chemical and physical properties, silicon carbide (SiC) thin films are considered excellent candidates for coatings in harsh environments and as protective coatings for heat exchangers. This study used a co-sputtering technique to deposit near-stoichiometric and nanocrystalline SiC thin films at room temperature. The films' microstructure and mechanical properties were analyzed as a function of the process gas pressure. It was found that the lowest gas pressure resulted in highly crystalline SiC films with improved mechanical performance.

Synthesis of smooth amorphous thin films of silicon carbide with controlled properties through pulsed laser deposition

Mohamed Oujja et al.

Summary: Smooth and uniform amorphous SiC films were successfully grown on Si and SrTiO3 substrates using nanosecond pulsed laser deposition. The morphology, crystallinity, and composition of the films were influenced by the laser wavelength and substrate temperature. The films were characterized by various analytical techniques, and optical emission spectroscopy was employed to evaluate the correlation between the plasma characteristics and film growth.

Electronic Properties and Structure of Silicene on Cu and Ni Substrates

Alexander Galashev et al.

Summary: This study investigated the electronic properties and geometric structure of silicene-Ni and silicene-Cu systems for use as LIB electrodes. The stability and structure of silicene were found to be influenced by the type of substrate used. The addition of a nickel intermediate layer between silicene and a copper substrate caused charge redistribution.

Rheological and thermal properties of the KF-KCl-K2SiF6 electrolyte for electrolytic production of silicon

Andrey Isakov et al.

Summary: Viscosity and phase transitions were studied in the (KF-KCl)(eut.)-(10 mol. %)K2SiF6 system, showing homogeneity at 903-993 K and nonhomogeneity at 984-1055 K. Viscosity exhibited linear changes with temperature in the range of 898-984 K, with decomposition leading to the formation of KF and SiF4.

Computational modeling of electrolytic deposition of a single-layer silicon film on silver and graphite substrates

Ksenia A. Ivanichkina et al.

Summary: The electrodeposition of silicon from a KF-KCl-KI salt melt at 1000 K using silver and graphite substrates has been studied by molecular dynamics. The adhesion energy between the silicon film and the substrate varies, with the film on silver having higher energy. Growth of silicon clusters is different on the two substrates: faster on graphite with multiple clusters forming simultaneously. Silicon diffusion coefficient decreases faster on graphite as the substrate fills up. Stress distribution in films is more uniform on graphite substrate.

Insight into the Thermodynamics of Graphene Growth on Copper

Paul Leidinger et al.

Summary: High-precision thermodynamic data was derived for single-layer graphene growth on Cu by measuring changes in graphene flake size during CVD. Using this data, it was determined that self-limiting single-layer graphene growth on copper occurs kinetically as thermodynamics favors multilayer graphene formation. This knowledge can be applied to other CVD-based graphene growth systems for future synthesis strategies.

Characterization of the mechanical properties of van der Waals heterostructures of stanene adsorbed on graphene, hexagonal boron-nitride and silicon carbide

Md Habibur Rahman et al.

Summary: Stanene has opened up new possibilities in quantum condensed matter and energy conversion devices, but its lower tensile strength hinders its further applications. Van der Waals heterostructures have proven to be highly versatile in integrating different two-dimensional materials with exceptional features, and have been extensively studied for potential applications in electronics and optoelectronics. Molecular Dynamics simulations in this study predict the tensile strength of Stanene heterostructures on graphene, hexagonal boron nitride, and silicon carbide for the first time, revealing insights for the design and operation of these structures under mechanical force.
