Oxygen vacancy dynamics in monoclinic metallic VO2 domain structures

Dustin Schrecongost et al.

Summary: The nano-optical and nanoelectronic properties of VO2 can be programmed through the local injection of oxygen vacancies by atomic force microscope writing. The dynamic evolution of the patterned domain structures is studied in this work, showing the critical threshold doping level for the metal-insulator transition and defect stabilization. The diffusion of oxygen vacancies in the monoclinic phase is characterized, which determines the short lifetimes of sub-100 nm domain structures.

Nonvolatile Control of Metal-Insulator Transition in VO2 by Ferroelectric Gating

Yoon Jung Lee et al.

Summary: By controlling phase transitions in correlated materials, new functional properties can be achieved. This study demonstrates the control of a nonvolatile metal-insulator transition in vanadium dioxide (VO2) using a ferroelectric layer, showing enhanced coupling between correlated electrons and ferroelectric polarization. The research provides insights into interface properties, structural phase transitions, and design principles for heteroepitaxial correlated materials.

Highly transparent ultrathin vanadium dioxide films with temperature-dependent infrared reflectance for smart windows

Kwang Hoon Jung et al.

Summary: Vanadium dioxide (VO2) is a material suitable for energy-efficient smart windows. In this study, we fabricated ultrathin VO2 films for smart windows and achieved high modulation ratios in the infrared (IR) region while maintaining high transmittance in the visible region. The results demonstrate the potential of highly transparent smart windows with ultrathin VO2 films for energy savings in buildings.

Switchable Terahertz Absorber from Single Broadband to Dual Broadband Based on Graphene and Vanadium Dioxide

Guan Wang et al.

Summary: This paper presents a multifunctional switchable terahertz (THz) absorber based on graphene and vanadium dioxide (VO2), which can switch between single or double broadband absorption by adjusting the temperature of VO2. The absorptivity's amplitude can be adjusted by changing the Fermi energy level of graphene or the conductivity of VO2 separately. The physical mechanism of the absorber and the effects of incidence angle on absorption have been studied, indicating that the absorber is insensitive to the polarization of electromagnetic waves.

Tuning carrier density and phase transitions in oxide semiconductors using focused ion beams

Hongyan Mei et al.

Summary: In this study, we demonstrated the ability to spatially modify metal oxides using a direct writing approach with a focused ion beam system. By doping a wide-bandgap semiconductor, zinc oxide, we achieved variable carrier concentrations, and by defect engineering a correlated semiconductor, vanadium dioxide, we locally modified its insulator-to-metal transition temperature. This area-selective modification method provides a simple and mask-less route to fabricate optical structures.
