Impurity Gettering in Polycrystalline-Silicon Based Passivating Contacts-The Role of Oxide Stoichiometry and Pinholes

Zhongshu Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the blocking effects of SiOx interlayers in poly-Si/SiOx structures and identifies the factors that determine these effects. It suggests using SiOx interlayers with lower stoichiometry or higher pinhole density for fast impurity gettering during the high-temperature formation of poly-Si/SiOx structures.

Perspectives on Black Silicon in Semiconductor Manufacturing: Experimental Comparison of Plasma Etching, MACE, and Fs-Laser Etching

Xiaolong Liu et al.

Summary: Traditionally considered a sign of unsuccessful etching, black silicon (bSi) in semiconductor manufacturing has properties that are found to be superior, making its integration into devices attractive. While the integration of bSi onto the whole wafer surface is already mature in devices like solar cells, research focuses on device properties with specific bSi fabrication methods for selective area coverage. This study investigates the fabrication characteristics and material properties of bSi patterns with varying dimensions, fabricated using plasma etching, metal-assisted chemical etching (MACE), and femtosecond-laser etching techniques.

Effect of thermal annealing on the structural and optical properties of black silicon

Gagik Ayvazyan et al.

Summary: Black silicon (b-Si) has excellent optical, electrical, and intrinsic properties, making it an ideal material for optoelectronic devices. It can be used as an anti-reflective surface in solar cells due to its low band reflection. However, thermal annealing treatment affects the optical and structural properties of b-Si layers, leading to a decrease in its optical performance. Therefore, a new fabrication process is proposed to improve the performance parameters of b-Si solar cells.

Porous Silicon Optical Devices: Recent Advances in Biosensing Applications

Rosalba Moretta et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the leading advancements in porous silicon (PSi) optical-biosensors achieved over the past five years, highlighting the cost-effective fabrication process, high internal surface area, tunable pore size, and photonic properties. Different optical PSi biosensors are classified into four classes based on the biorecognition elements immobilized on the surface, with discussions on PL signal modulation and effective refractive index changes as the main optical transduction mechanisms. Additionally, common approaches for chemically stabilizing and functionalizing the PSi surface are described.

Impurity Gettering by Silicon Nitride Films: Kinetics, Mechanisms, and Simulation

Tien T. Le et al.

Summary: This study investigates the gettering kinetics and mechanisms of silicon nitride films, showing that gettering mainly occurs via segregation, with different activation energies observed under different deposition conditions. The presence of an interfacial diffusion barrier is suggested in some cases, which slows down the transport of iron impurities to the gettering regions.
