Stray radiation produced in FLASH electron beams characterized by the MiniPIX Timepix3 Flex detector

C. Oancea et al.

Summary: This work aims to characterize ultra-high dose rate pulses (UHDpulse) electron beams using the hybrid semiconductor pixel detector. The Timepix3 (TPX3) ASIC chip was used to measure the composition, spatial, time, and spectral characteristics of the secondary radiation fields from pulsed 15-23 MeV electron beams. Preliminary results highlight both the technique and the detector's ability to measure individual UHDpulses of electron beams delivered in short pulses.

High-energy per-pixel calibration of timepix pixel detector with laboratory alpha source

Marek Sommer et al.

Summary: The spectral response of the Timepix pixel detector at high per-pixel proportional range has been expanded and calibrated using a simple technique and alpha particles, enabling accurate measurements of high-energy loss particles. The study revealed changes in per-pixel spectral response above 850 keV/px, which the newly developed method successfully covers using an alpha source for calibration.

Silicon 3D Microdosimeters for Advanced Quality Assurance in Particle Therapy

Linh T. Tran et al.

Summary: The Centre for Medical Radiation Physics introduced the concept of Silicon On Insulator (SOI) microdosimeters with 3-Dimensional (3D) cylindrical sensitive volumes (SVs) mimicking the dimensions of cells in an array. Several designs of high-definition 3D SVs fabricated using 3D MEMS technology were implemented. The SVs were used to evaluate the relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of heavy ions and protons delivered by different particle therapy centers.

Spectral-sensitive proton radiography of thin samples with the pixel detector Timepix3

V Olsansky et al.

Summary: We evaluate a high-resolution contrast-enhanced method for energy-sensitive radiography of thin samples with low-energy protons. The method utilizes the high-sensitivity of hybrid semiconductor pixel detectors and integrated per-pixel signal processing electronics. The results show that the method can achieve high-contrast imaging and has high sensitivity to different types of samples and beam energies.

Monte Carlo modelling of pixel clusters in Timepix detectors using the MCNP code

Jaroslav Solc et al.

Summary: The track structure of the signal measured by the semiconductor pixel detector Timepix3 was modeled in the Monte Carlo MCNP (R) code. The study developed a detailed model at the pixel-level and used it to generate and store clusters of adjacent hit pixels observed in the measured data. The method helps differentiate radiation components in mixed fields based on the detector's response to different particle types, energies, and incidence angles that cannot be measured separately.

A novel proton counting detector and method for the validation of tissue and implant material maps for Monte Carlo dose calculation

Serdar Charyyev et al.

Summary: The study presents a method to characterize the relative stopping power (RSP) of implants and human tissue mimicking materials using a novel proton counting detector. By tracking protons and analyzing energy spectra, RSP values for metal rods, bone, and different tissues were successfully determined. The proposed method shows potential for validating material and density maps required for proton Monte Carlo dose calculation.

Evaluating very high energy electron RBE from nanodosimetric pBR322 plasmid DNA damage

K. L. Small et al.

Summary: This paper presents the first plasmid DNA irradiations carried out with Very High Energy Electrons (VHEE) over 100-200 MeV at the CLEAR user facility at CERN to determine the Relative Biological Effectiveness (RBE) of VHEE. The study found similarities in DNA damage yields between VHEE and conventional modalities, and reasonable agreement between experimental values and current models for DSB yield. Additionally, no significant variations in DSB yield with dose rate were observed following VHEE irradiation, indicating no FLASH effect under these conditions.

Characterization of a novel large area microdosimeter system for low dose rate radiation environments

Vladimir A. Pan et al.

Summary: The feasibility of the newly developed microdosimetry system Octobox for application in low dose rate, mixed radiation environments was assessed through a characterization study at HIMAC in Japan and ANSTO in Australia. The device demonstrated efficient data collection, accurate measurement of microdosimetric quantities, and good agreement with Geant4 simulations for various ion fields. The findings suggest Octobox could be used effectively in mixed, low dose rate radiation environments for radiation protection in space, aviation, and underground mines.
