Ferromagnetic Double Perovskite Semiconductors with Tunable Properties

Lun Jin et al.

Summary: The authors successfully doped Sr2GaSbO6, a magnetically silent double perovskite semiconductor, with magnetic trivalent cation Mn3+ to induce ferromagnetism and tune its bandgap. The new material, Sr2Ga1-xMnxSbO6 double perovskite, exhibits tunable ferromagnetic ordering temperature and bandgap, suggesting its potential application in next-generation oxide-based spintronic devices.

Persistent half-metallic ferromagnetism in a (111)-oriented manganite superlattice

Fabrizio Cossu et al.

Summary: Using electronic structure calculations, we demonstrate that a (111)-oriented (LaMnO3)(12)/(SrMnO3)(6) superlattice maintains a half-metallic ferromagnetic character despite its large thickness, which is attributed to strain and octahedral connectivity between the layers. Interestingly, the maximum magnetization is observed inside the LaMnO3 region rather than at the interface, in contrast to the behavior observed for the (001) orientation. The inter-atomic exchange coupling suggests that the magnetic order arises from the double-exchange mechanism, despite competing interactions inside the SrMnO3 region.

Ferromagnetic order of ultra-thin La0.7Ba0.3MnO3 sandwiched between SrRuO3 layers

Cinthia Piamonteze et al.

Summary: In this study, the stability of ferromagnetic order of one unit cell thick optimally doped manganite epitaxially grown between two layers of SrRuO3 is demonstrated using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. The research shows an inverted hysteresis loop and strong antiferromagnetic coupling, while Density Functional Theory calculations suggest that coherent interfaces hinder electronic confinement and SRO enables LBMO to have structural stability. All these factors contribute to the stable ferromagnetism of LBMO up to 130K.

Superexchange dominates in magnetic topological insulators

Cezary Sliwa et al.

Summary: It has been suggested that the enlarged spin susceptibility in topological insulators contributes to the ferromagnetism of bismuth-antimony topological chalcogenides doped with transition metal impurities, while earlier studies of HgTe and related systems indicate antiferromagnetic coupling. Despite being in topological systems, the magnitude of interband contribution is small, and the sign of magnetism depends on the coordination and charge state of magnetic impurities rather than the topological class of the host material.

Realization of the Chern-insulator and axion-insulator phases in antiferromagnetic MnTe/Bi2(Se, Te)3/MnTe heterostructures

N. Pournaghavi et al.

Summary: Breaking time-reversal symmetry in three-dimensional topological insulator thin films can lead to different topological quantum phases, such as the Chern insulator (CI) phase and the axion insulator (AI) phase. Investigating a trilayer heterostructure composed of a Bi2Se3 (Bi2Te3) TI thin film sandwiched between two antiferromagnetic MnTe layers using first-principles density functional theory methods reveals the onset of these two topological phases. The study also discusses the possibility of inducing transitions between the CI and the AI phases through the spin-orbit torque caused by the spin Hall effect in an adjacent conducting layer.

Summary: This study combines relativistic first-principles calculations, tight-binding approach, and magnetic circular dichroism theory to reveal that the physics of magnetic circular dichroism at the boundary of the Brillouin zone is strongly affected by two relativistic effects in particular compounds.
