Scalable Three-Dimensional Photobioelectrodes Made of Reduced Graphene Oxide Combined with Photosystem I

Sascha Morlock et al.

Summary: The study focuses on using reduced graphene oxide as an electrode material to construct a three-dimensional structure for semi-artificial photosynthesis. By optimizing electrode preparation and protein immobilization, the performance and thickness of the electrode can be adjusted to achieve higher photocurrents. The operational stability and performance at low illumination intensities have been analyzed and show promising results.

Layer-by-Layer Assembly of Photosystem I and PEDOT:PSS Biohybrid Films for Photocurrent Generation

Kody D. Wolfe et al.

Summary: Efficient electron transfer between biomolecules and electrode interfaces is crucial for many bioelectrochemical processes. By leveraging electrostatic interactions, PSI protein complexes can be deposited as monolayers within a short time, and high loadings of PSI between PEDOT:PSS layers can be achieved through layer-by-layer deposition, improving electron collection rates.

Aqueous-soluble bipyridine cobalt(ii/iii) complexes act as direct redox mediators in photosystem I-based biophotovoltaic devices

Alexandra H. Teodor et al.

Summary: This study characterizes synthetic cobalt complexes as redox mediators for PSI-based biophotovoltaic devices and demonstrates their stability and effectiveness in organic solvents. The research shows evidence of direct electron transfer from cobalt complexes to PSI, leading to photocurrent generation. The findings suggest the potential for fine-tuning redox active species to interact with biological partners for the development of low cost, carbon-neutral energy production in the future.
