Social status does not predict in-camp integration among egalitarian hunter-gatherer men

Piotr Fedurek et al.

Summary: This study explores the translation of social prestige into in-person interactions and proximity within a small-scale society. The findings suggest that popularity and hunting reputation have different impacts on physical closeness in the context of the Hadza hunter-gatherer men. In-camp proximity networks alone do not capture the full picture of social preferences, as popularity is more indicative of being integrated in the proximity networks when out of camp. It is important to consider both in-camp and out-of-camp proximity networks for a comprehensive understanding of social preferences among hunter-gatherers.
