Summary: Diabetes and high blood sugar increase the risk of acute ischemic stroke and worsen clinical outcomes. Post-stroke hyperglycemia is also present in non-diabetic patients, possibly as a stress response. This review examines the effects of hyperglycemia in acute stroke patients, explores the outcomes and effectiveness of insulin treatment, and suggests potential therapeutic strategies.

Summary: This study found that levels of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) are elevated in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients and increase after undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (pPCI). The type of antithrombotic therapy used can influence the levels of NETs, and specific markers of NETs are associated with cardiovascular outcomes.

Edaravone Dexborneol Downregulates Neutrophil Extracellular Trap Expression and Ameliorates Blood-Brain Barrier Permeability in Acute Ischemic Stroke

Yuanxiang Huang et al.

Summary: Background: Inflammatory processes have a detrimental role in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) and neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) contribute to the proinflammatory response and blood-brain barrier (BBB) damage. Edaravone Dexborneol (Eda.B) has been shown to be effective in treating AIS, but its effect on NETs and BBB permeability is unclear. Conclusion: NETs are related to the early stage of AIS, and Eda.B exerts neuroprotective effects and improves BBB permeability in AIS.

Neutrophil extracellular traps regulate ischemic stroke brain injury

Frederik Denorme et al.

Summary: Ischemic stroke triggers a strong inflammatory response, leading to exacerbated outcomes. Neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) formation was observed in the brain tissue of ischemic stroke patients, with elevated plasma NET biomarkers correlating with worse stroke outcomes. Platelets were identified as the critical source of high-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1), which caused NETs in the acute phase of stroke. Depletion of platelets or platelet-specific knockout of HMGB1 significantly reduced plasma HMGB1 and NET levels, resulting in improved stroke outcomes. The therapeutic potential of neonatal NET-inhibitory factor (nNIF) in stroke was also investigated, with promising results in reducing brain infarcts and enhancing survival, even when administered one hour after stroke onset.
