Mechanism of Particle Agglomeration for Single and Multi-Nozzle Atomization in Spray Drying: A Review

Ireneusz Zbicinski et al.

Summary: This paper reviews experimental works on the effects of single nozzle location and multi-nozzle atomization on the mechanism of particle agglomeration in spray drying. The study found that nozzle location and spray mode have significant effects on particle agglomeration. Spray drying from a single nozzle located at the top of the tower resulted in larger particle sizes, while moving the nozzle down towards the air inlet led to a reduction in particle size. The study also discusses the conditions for droplet-droplet, dry-dry, or sticky-dry collisions in multiple-nozzle atomization, which can lead to coalescence, agglomeration, and rebound of particles.

Self-Formation of Superhydrophobic Surfaces through Interfacial Energy Engineering between Liquids and Particles

Sumaira Yasmeen et al.

Summary: The study presents a method of self-synthesizing superhydrophobic surfaces using daily supplies by coating a substrate with liquid and sprinkling powders onto it. The mechanistic study reveals that capillary force drives the liquid solution into the porous channels within the powders, creating a 3D porous nanostructure resulting in a water contact angle over 160 degrees.

Modulation of evaporation-affected crystal motion in a drying droplet by saline and surfactant concentrations

Spray-Congealing and Wet-Sieving as Alternative Processes for Engineering of Inhalation Carrier Particles: Comparison of Surface Properties, Blending and In Vitro Performance

Joana T. Pinto et al.

Summary: This study explored various particle engineering processes to produce D-mannitol carriers for inhaled delivery. Wet-sieving produced D-mannitol particles with narrow size distribution, while spray-congealing generated free-flowing spherical particles. Wet-sieved D-mannitol particles showed benefits for drug aerosolization, especially when combined with a ternary agent, while spray-congealed D-mannitol exhibited promising results in increasing the fine particle fraction of the drug without additional agents.
