Microencapsulation of Olive Oil: A Comprehensive Review

Donia Chaabane et al.

Summary: Olive oil is highly valued for its unique functional properties and its potential to prevent various metabolic disorders. However, oxidative deterioration limits its shelf life and reduces its biological activities. Microencapsulation has been proposed as a solution to preserve the quality of olive oil. This review provides comprehensive information on the techniques used to prepare olive oil microcapsules, including emulsification, drying, coacervation, and extrusion. Various materials, such as proteins and polysaccharides, are used as wall materials for encapsulation. The article also discusses the impact of different factors on the characteristics of the microcapsules and highlights the applications of encapsulated olive oil in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries.

Encapsulation of Orange Oil Using Fluidized Bed Granulation

Gary Reineccius et al.

Summary: This research compares granulation to spray drying/agglomeration for producing flavoring particles. The study finds that granulation produces better properties, such as improved oxidation resistance, higher density, without the need for a two-step process.

Systematic Review on the Effectiveness of Essential and Carrier Oils as Skin Penetration Enhancers in Pharmaceutical Formulations

Bahjat Alhasso et al.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed the literature to explore the selection and effectiveness of different oils in pharmaceutical formulations. The results suggest that terpene essential oils have advantages over fatty acid-containing oils in enhancing drug permeation through the skin, especially when incorporated into advanced formulations like nanoemulsions, microemulsions, vesicular systems, and transdermal patches.

Comparative Study on Microencapsulation of Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia Mill.) and Peppermint (Mentha piperita L.) Essential Oils via Spray-Drying Technique

Bissera Pilicheva et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the encapsulation of lavender and peppermint oils in Arabic gum/maltodextrin microparticles by spray-drying is a feasible approach for converting liquids to solids, making them more suitable for use in powder technology. The type and concentration of wall material, as well as the type of essential oil, significantly impact the encapsulation process and the characteristics of the final particles.

Microencapsulation of Peppermint Oil by Complex Coacervation and Subsequent Spray Drying Using Bovine Serum Albumin/Gum Acacia and an Oxidized Starch Crosslinker

Wilhelm Robert Glomm et al.

Summary: The study focused on microencapsulating peppermint essential oil via complex coacervation using bovine serum albumin and gum acacia as wall materials, followed by chemical crosslinking with modified food-grade starch and spray drying. The resulting dry microcapsules were easily redispersed in aqueous solutions. Microcapsule formation and stability, as well as microencapsulation yield, were influenced by polymer concentration, core material load/wall thickness, and crosslinker concentration.
