Grapevine rootstock and soil microbiome interactions: Keys for a resilient viticulture

Romain Darriaut et al.

Summary: Soil microbiota plays a crucial role in viticulture resilience, especially in relation to root dynamics and rootstocks. Studying the diversity and activity of soil microbiomes, as well as conducting soil microbiome engineering, can enhance grapevine's disease resistance and adaptability.

Effect of the Combined Treatments with LC2017 and Trichoderma atroviride Strain I-1237 on Disease Development and Defense Responses in Vines Infected by Lasiodiplodia theobromae

Pedro Reis et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effectiveness of two products in controlling Lasiodiplodia theobromae and their elicitor effect on plant defense responses. The results showed that the combination of the two products did not reduce lesion length, and confirmed the elicitor effect of LC2017 on plant defense. Additionally, a specific response related to the cultivar was discovered, but further investigation is needed.

Biocontrol Activity of Trichoderma Species Isolated from Grapevines in British Columbia against Botryosphaeria Dieback Fungal Pathogens

Jinxz Pollard-Flamand et al.

Summary: This study identified several Trichoderma species from grapevines in British Columbia and evaluated their biocontrol activity against BD fungi. The results showed that these isolates were able to significantly inhibit the growth of fungal pathogens and provide protection for pruning wounds for up to 21 days. They also exhibited similar or better control compared to commercial products.

Bacillus pumilus PTB180 and Bacillus subtilis PTB185: Production of lipopeptides, antifungal activity, and biocontrol ability against Botrytis cinerea

Mathieu Bouchard-Rochette et al.

Summary: Bacillus pumilus strain PTB180 and Bacillus subtilis strain PTB185 secrete lipopetides that have strong antagonistic activity against several plant pathogens, including Botrytis cinerea. These strains inhibit the mycelial growth and conidial germination of B. cinerea and can survive on tomato phyllosphere for at least 21 days. Foliar applications of these strains significantly reduce the incidence and severity of gray mold on tomato plants.

Metagenomic Assessment Unravels Fungal Microbiota Associated to Grapevine Trunk Diseases

Mariana Patanita et al.

Summary: Grapevine trunk diseases (GTDs) are complex and challenging to identify and eradicate. This study investigated the fungal community structure associated with GTDs symptomatic and asymptomatic grapevines. The results showed that symptomatic plants had a lower abundance but higher diversity of GTDs-associated fungi. The composition of fungal endophytic communities was significantly different according to the symptomatology and not affected by the cultivar.

Investigation ofTrichodermaspecies colonization of nursery grapevines for improved management of black foot disease

Wynand J. van Jaarsveld et al.

Summary: The results of the experiment showed that different treatments of Trichoderma significantly reduced black foot infections in the rootstock bases of the vines in only one season. The colonization of Trichoderma was significantly higher in the base and collar roots compared to the middle and root tip parts, with significantly less BFD pathogens isolated from the base than the roots. The dipping of basal ends in the dry formulation followed by monthly soil drenches consistently gave higher colonization, while the 1-hour soak of the bases of vines was not effective.

Field evaluation of biocontrol agents against black-foot and Petri diseases of grapevine

Maria del Pilar Martinez-Diz et al.

Summary: The effectiveness of some biocontrol agents in reducing the incidence and severity of black-foot and Petri diseases varied depending on the plant part analyzed and the plant age. Combining multiple beneficial microbes in a biocontrol preparation is necessary to prevent infection by these fungi in vineyards.

Genome sequence analysis of the beneficial Bacillus subtilis PTA-271 isolated from a Vitis vinifera (cv. Chardonnay) rhizospheric soil: assets for sustainable biocontrol

Catarina Leal et al.

Summary: The draft genome sequence of the beneficial Bacillus subtilis PTA-271 isolated from the rhizospheric soil of healthy Vitis vinifera cv. Chardonnay in France reveals its potential for strong colonizing and interacting capacities, along with a wide range of genes encoding bioactive substances that can protect plants against various pathogens. The diverse array of putatively encoded biomolecules by PTA-271 suggests its environmentally robust biocontrol potential, making it a promising candidate for plant protection.
