The global prevalence and ethnic heterogeneity of primary ciliary dyskinesia gene variants: a genetic database analysis

William B. Hannah et al.

Summary: The study aimed to estimate the global prevalence and ethnic heterogeneity of primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD). By calculating the allele frequency of disease-causing variants in 29 PCD genes associated with autosomal recessive inheritance in 182,681 individuals, the minimum worldwide prevalence of PCD was found to be at least one in 7,554 individuals, with higher rates in individuals of African ancestry compared to other populations. The study also identified gene distributions that differ from previous European and North American studies.

Mechanism of action, resistance, synergism, and clinical implications of azithromycin

Mohsen Heidary et al.

Summary: This review examines the clinical and biochemical aspects of azithromycin and highlights its benefits and drawbacks. The study finds that azithromycin has a wide range of antimicrobial effects and can be used to treat various diseases, but there is an increasing global prevalence of azithromycin resistance. The review recommends using combination therapy with other drugs to address different pathogens.

Current and Future Treatments in Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia

Tamara Paff et al.

Summary: Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a rare genetic ciliopathy that disrupts mucociliary clearance due to abnormal cilia motion or reduced generation of motile cilia, leading to lung damage from recurrent airway infections. Current treatment focuses on improving mucociliary clearance and early management of bacterial airway infections, with guidelines primarily based on cystic fibrosis (CF) guidelines. Limited research has been conducted on PCD, including three trials and several case reports, with exploration of precision medicine approaches such as gene therapy and mRNA transcript therapy.

A Comprehensive Approach for the Diagnosis of Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia-Experiences from the First 100 Patients of the PCD-UNIBE Diagnostic Center

Loretta Mueller et al.

Summary: Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a rare genetic disease with respiratory symptoms typically starting at birth. Diagnosing PCD requires a comprehensive approach utilizing methods such as HSVM, IF, TEM, and genetics. PCD-UNIBE in Switzerland is the first comprehensive PCD diagnostic center, offering a thorough diagnostic approach for assessing patients with potential PCD.

International BEAT-PCD consensus statement for infection prevention and control for primary ciliary dyskinesia in collaboration with ERN-LUNG PCD Core Network and patient representatives

June K. Marthin et al.

Summary: This article presents the first international consensus statement on infection prevention and control (IP&C) specifically for patients with PCD, including 20 IP&C statements covering microbiological identification, treatment indications for specific pathogens, and suggested segregation aspects to minimize infection transmission. The consensus statement is targeted at clinicians, microbiologists, patient organizations, and patients and their families, aiming to improve infection control practices in the care of PCD patients.
