Is Lumbar Puncture Avoidable in Low-Risk Neonates with Suspected Sepsis?

Summary: The study aimed to minimize unnecessary lumbar punctures among neonates by identifying a subgroup at extremely low risk of possible meningitis. The analysis found that the subgroup with no apneas, no neutrophilia, and normal CRP had a 29% probability of definite or possible meningitis. There was no identifiable subgroup among neonates with suspected sepsis in which it was safe to avoid an LP.

Cerebrospinal fluid and plasma procalcitonin for the diagnosis of neonatal bacterial meningitis

Summary: This study evaluated the use of cerebrospinal fluid procalcitonin (PCT) for diagnosing neonatal bacterial meningitis. The results showed that higher levels of CSF PCT are associated with bacterial meningitis in neonates, however, the diagnostic performance of CSF PCT is modest and not significantly different from standard tests.
