Quality of life and clinical results after endovascular sclerotherapy: A comparison between intra- and extramuscular low-flow venous malformations

Annamaria Weitz-Tuoretmaa et al.

Summary: Although radiological changes were observed in MRI scans, they did not correlate with any subjective symptoms. 56% of patients reported benefiting from the treatment based on self-evaluation. Results suggest that intramuscular VMs respond similarly to treatment as extramuscular malformations. Post-treatment MRI findings are not indicative of subjective symptoms or QOL results, indicating routine post-treatment examinations may be unnecessary. Subjective symptoms and QOL are crucial in evaluating the effectiveness of sclerotherapy.

Management of lymphatic vascular malformations: A systematic review of the literature

Neil M. Kalwani et al.

Summary: Lymphatic malformations (LM) are common congenital vascular lesions that can deform local anatomy and be life-threatening. Surgery remains a mainstay in LM management, while sclerotherapy has emerged as a first-line treatment for macrocystic LMs and sirolimus has shown promise as a treatment for LMs.

Balloon occlusion as an adjunctive technique during sclerotherapy of Puig's classified advanced venous malformations

Sri Hari Sundararajan et al.

Summary: The study reviewed the experience of using endovenous balloon occlusion as an adjunct to sclerotherapy in patients with types 2-4 venous malformations. This technique reduces the risk of non-target systemic venous embolization, allowing for deeper penetration of sclerosant and maintained treatment efficacy.

The effects of surgical treatment and sclerotherapy for intramuscular venous malformations: a comparative clinical study

Yun Hyun Kim et al.

Summary: This study compared clinical outcomes between patients with IMVMs treated with sclerotherapy and surgical excision, showing significantly better outcomes in the surgical treatment group in terms of movement limitations, QOL, and radiological outcomes. The study suggests that surgical excision is strongly encouraged for the treatment of IMVMs.
