Zic5 stabilizes Gli3 via a non-transcriptional mechanism during retinal development

Jian Sun et al.

Summary: The Zic5 transcription factor is critical for the differentiation of retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE) and the rod photoreceptor layer by suppressing Hedgehog signaling. Zic5 interacts with Gli3 and disrupts its homodimerization, resulting in Gli3 protein stabilization. This study provides insights into the role of Zic5 in regulating Gli3 stability for proper eye development.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

WNT-responsive SUMOylation of ZIC5 promotes murine neural crest cell development, having multiple effects on transcription

Radiya G. Ali et al.

Summary: Zinc finger of the cerebellum (Zic) proteins play a crucial role in neural crest cell specification and their activity is influenced by WNT-dependent SUMOylation. In the presence of high canonical WNT activity, SUMOylation of a lysine residue within the ZF-NC domain of ZIC5 reduces the formation of a ZIC-TCF co-repressor complex, leading to neural crest specification defects.

Transcriptional expression of ZICs as an independent indicator of survival in gliomas

Zhaocheng Han et al.

Summary: The study revealed the functional significance and prognostic relevance of the ZIC gene family in gliomas, with high ZIC1/5 expression associated with poor prognosis in LGG patients and low ZIC3 expression related to favorable prognosis in GBM patients. Immune cell infiltration, pathway enrichment, and PPI networks were all found to be associated with the expression of ZIC genes in gliomas.
