Acute differences in blood lipids and inflammatory biomarkers following controlled exposures to cookstove air pollution in the STOVES study

While many cookstoves have been developed to reduce this pollution, it remains unclear whether they actually improve health. A controlled exposure study found that short-term exposure to cookstove air pollution can increase levels of inflammatory biomarkers within 24 hours.

Summary: In this study, a dissolution test system that allows for controlled testing of nano- and micrometer size materials under specific atmospheric composition, temperature, and pH was presented. The system enables dissolution testing in simulant fluids and calculates the dissolution rates and reactivity of the materials. The system showed high intra-laboratory repeatability and robustness across repeated testing, and the uncertainty levels of dissolution were also determined.

Summary: The type of pre-dispersion medium can significantly affect the dissolution of nanomaterials. In this study, the use of 0.05% bovine serum albumin (BSA) pre-dispersion medium resulted in a delay or decrease in the dissolution of the nanomaterials. This highlights the importance of considering pre-dispersion conditions in dissolution testing.

Health effects after inhalation of micro- and nano-sized zinc oxide particles in human volunteers

Summary: The study investigated the health effects of inhalation of different sizes of ZnO particles. Results showed that nano-sized and micro-sized particles didn't differ significantly in their impact on systemic inflammatory responses. The higher deposition efficiency of micro-sized particles in the respiratory tract led to stronger inflammatory reactions.

A transcriptomic overview of lung and liver changes one day after pulmonary exposure to graphene and graphene oxide
