Toxoplasma gondii in raccoons (Procyon lotor) in Germany: a serosurvey based on meat juice

Summary: This study determined the seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in meat juice samples from 820 free-living raccoons in Germany. The overall seroprevalence was found to be 48.5%, with significant differences observed between seasons, sex, and weight of the raccoons. Male raccoons and those with higher weight had higher seroprevalence rates. The findings suggest that T. gondii infection is widespread among the German raccoon population, posing a potential transmission risk to humans through consumption or handling of animal products.

The study found high seroprevalence in wild foxes compared to farmed Arctic foxes, discussed economic and public health issues related to some carnivore species, and evaluated diagnostic methods and genetic diversity. It highlighted clinical toxoplasmosis in carnivores with concurrent Canine Distemper Virus infection, as well as genetic diversity of isolates notably in the USA. Limited information was available on genotyping isolates from other countries such as Brazil, China, France, and Grenada.

Summary: The study in the Federal State of Brandenburg, Germany, revealed the presence of Toxoplasma gondii in game with the highest infection rate in wild boar. Type II specific alleles of T. gondii were the most prevalent, and a significantly higher proportion of positive qPCR results were found in 50g of heart muscle compared to 5g. Positive correlation between seropositivity and direct detection was observed in wild boar and roe deer, confirming the infectivity of T. gondii DNA-positive samples.
