Assessing Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) for Evaluation of Aedes aegypti Population Age Structure

Teresa Joy et al.

Summary: Knowing the age structure of mosquito populations is important for predicting the likelihood of pathogen transmission. Current methods of age grading mosquitoes in the field face limitations in accuracy, technical challenges, and cost. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) has the potential to quickly and cost effectively monitor changes in the age structure of mosquito populations, but accurate age predictions are still a challenge. This study compared the effectiveness of NIRS to age grade field-collected mosquitoes and found that while it could not predict the precise age of individual mosquitoes, it can track changes in the age structure of the population.

The effect of resource limitation on the temperature dependence of mosquito population fitness

Paul J. Huxley et al.

Summary: Research shows that low resource supply significantly impacts the population growth rate of mosquitoes at different temperatures, especially causing the peak population growth rate to occur at a lower temperature. This is mainly due to an increase in juvenile mortality and development time, as well as a decrease in adult size under low-resource conditions. Future studies need to consider resource supply factors to accurately predict the effects of climate and habitat change on vector-borne diseases and other arthropods.
