Secondary malaria vectors in western Kenya include novel species with unexpectedly high densities and parasite infection rates

Amine M. Mustapha et al.

Summary: This study investigated the species compositions and bionomic traits of secondary malaria vectors in three high transmission sites in Kisumu County, western Kenya. The results show that these secondary vectors, primarily caught outdoors, have higher proportions of Plasmodium-infected individuals and exhibit susceptibility to insecticides, indicating their potential significant contribution to malaria transmission. Further studies on morphological and molecular identification of these vectors are needed for better understanding and monitoring of their roles in malaria transmission and development of insecticide resistance.

A comparison of PCR and ELISA methods to detect different stages of Plasmodium vivax in Anopheles arabiensis

Allison L. Hendershot et al.

Summary: This study compared a PCR method targeting the Plasmodium mt COX-I gene with CSP ELISA for identifying different life stages of the parasite in mosquitoes. The PCR method was found to be more sensitive and detected a higher percentage of infected mosquitoes compared to ELISA.

An increasing role of pyrethroid-resistant Anopheles funestus in malaria transmission in the Lake Zone, Tanzania

Nancy S. Matowo et al.

Summary: Anopheles funestus is the predominant vector in malaria transmission in Northwest Tanzania, with Anopheles gambiae playing a lesser role which is influenced by seasonal rainfall. Both vectors show similar resistance to alpha-cypermethrin and permethrin, highlighting the need for new vector control strategies to combat persistent malaria transmission in the region.

Impact of cattle on the abundance of indoor and outdoor resting malaria vectors in southern Malawi

Monicah M. Mburu et al.

Summary: Understanding the impact of livestock presence on malaria vectors' resting habits in households is crucial for effective malaria control. The study found that the presence of cattle near houses was associated with a reduction in the abundance of certain malaria vectors indoors, suggesting a potential protective effect of cattle. However, further studies are recommended to fully support this finding and understand the interactions between different malaria vector species and potential blood meal hosts.
