Fabrication of microstructures in the bulk and on the surface of sapphire by anisotropic selective wet etching of laser-affected volumes

L. Capuano et al.

Summary: This paper presents a processing technique for sapphire that combines laser-induced amorphization and selective wet etching. Microstructures can be achieved on the surface and in the bulk of sapphire substrates using this technique. Ultrashort laser pulses are used to transform the sapphire structure from crystalline to amorphous, and an etchant consisting of sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid is used to selectively remove the amorphized part. This method allows the realization of structures that are impossible to achieve with conventional etchants.

Thermal and mechanical limitations to processing resolution in volume non-diffractive ultrafast laser structuring

Guodong Zhang et al.

Summary: The study investigates the material responses during ultrafast laser structuring, determining the affected zone. Through ion beam milling and electron microscopy, laser-induced cavitation and internal fracturing are observed. Mechanical stress and melting are identified as key factors limiting processing resolution, controllable by energy density regulation.
