Terahertz pump-probe of liquid water at 12.3 THz

Summary: The dynamical complexity of the hydrogen-bonded water network is studied through intense Terahertz spectroscopy, exploring anharmonicity effects and driving the liquid into the nonlinear response regime. By comparing experiments on static and free-flowing water samples, distinct contributions of thermal, acoustic, and nonlinear optical effects are disentangled. Anisotropic nonlinear optical response is observed during pump-probe overlap, with the nonlinear signal being more prominent in the liquid jet due to pronounced temperature and density perturbations.

Summary: The features of a liquid jet-based broadband terahertz (THz) generator, including its optical part, system for liquid jet formation, and applications for studying conversion efficiency and energy temperature dependence, are described in this study. A decrease in optical-to-THz conversion efficiency is observed when using high-temperature water, which is attributed to the increased THz wave absorption of the water jet. The system allows achieving optical-to-THz conversion efficiency up to 0.1% with a-pinene double-pulse excitation.

Giant Third-Order Nonlinear Response of Liquids at Terahertz Frequencies

Summary: The nonlinear response of liquids in the terahertz regime has attracted significant interest recently. This study reported measurements of the nonlinear refractive-index coefficient n2 at terahertz frequencies for liquids with noncentrosymmetric molecules, showing values in the terahertz region 6 orders of magnitude larger than in the visible or near-IR. A simple theoretical model confirmed that the large third-order nonlinearity is mainly due to the second-order perturbative component of the vibrational response of these molecules.
