Theory of Chirality Induced Spin Selectivity: Progress and Challenges

Ferdinand Evers et al.

Summary: This article provides a critical overview of the theory of the chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect and reviews its applications in electron processes. It discusses the latest developments in the understanding of the CISS effects in electron transmission, electron transport, and chemical reactions, and identifies the remaining challenges and research opportunities.

Anti-Symmetric Medium Chirality Leading to Symmetric Field Helicity in Response to a Pair of Circularly Polarized Plane Waves in Counter-Propagating Configuration

Hyoung-In Lee

Summary: We examine the response of a chiral medium to a pair of circularly polarized plane waves and provide analytic formulas for key parameters. We find that most of these parameters are asymmetric with respect to the medium chirality, except for a counter-propagating pair which exhibits symmetry. The implications of these asymmetries and symmetries in typical applications in optics and physics are discussed.

Axionic surface wave in dynamical axion insulators

Tongshuai Zhu et al.

Summary: A new type of polariton excitation, surface axion polariton, was discovered to propagate at the interface between a dynamical axion insulator and a dielectric. When doping the dynamical axion insulator to be metallic, a mixed surface axion plasmon polariton will be generated through the coexistence of axion-photon coupling and plasmon-photon coupling.

Transverse spinning of unpolarized light

J. S. Eismann et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the existence of a transverse spin component in non-paraxial light, which is independent of the circular polarization state of the light. The results show that this transverse spin remains present even in non-paraxial fields generated from totally unpolarized light, suggesting a fundamental difference in the meaning of 'full depolarization' between 2D paraxial and 3D non-paraxial fields. This discovery opens up new avenues for investigating spin-related phenomena and optical manipulation using unpolarized light.

Reactive helicity and reactive power in nanoscale optics: Evanescent waves. Kerker conditions. Optical theorems and reactive dichroism

Manuel Nieto-Vesperinas et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a new theorem in the study of time-harmonic optical fields, discussing complex helicity and its associated reactive quantities. The reactive properties are illustrated through experiments with evanescent waves and fields scattered from magnetodielectric dipolar nanoparticles. Additionally, two optical theorems are established to explain the accumulation of reactive helicity and power in scattered light. This study provides insights into the reactive behavior of light and nanoparticles, which can have applications in optical phenomena such as enantiomeric separation.

Chiral sensing with achiral anisotropic metasurfaces

Sotiris Droulias et al.

Summary: This theoretical analysis focuses on chiral sensing using achiral anisotropic metasurfaces, presenting simple formulas that offer insight into the sensing mechanism. The study demonstrates how unknown chirality can be deconvolved from background dispersion and proposes practical measurement schemes for determination. The article also discusses key functionalities and benefits of anisotropic metasurfaces, emphasizing design principles for broadband operation and highlighting the potential for highly sensitive nanoscale chiroptical spectroscopy.
