Magnetic on-off switching of a plasmonic laser

Francisco Freire-Fernandez et al.

Summary: Research has shown that active magnetic-field control over lasing can be achieved in a periodic array of Co/Pt multilayer nanodots immersed in an IR-140 dye solution, allowing for external manipulation of plasmonic nanolasers. By exploiting the magnetic nature of the nanoparticles and mode tailoring, the transition between lasing action and non-lasing emission can be controlled, showcasing a new way to modulate plasmonic lasers. This study also demonstrates how the effects of magnetization on light, typically weak, can be observed in the lasing regime, paving the way for further exploration in topological photonics.

Hybrid metasurface perfect absorbers for temperature and biosensing applications

M. A. Butt et al.

Summary: This work presents a comprehensive study of the sensing capabilities of a hybrid metasurface perfect absorber (HMSPA) based on square meta-atoms (S-MAs) and hollow-square meta-atoms (HS-MAs). Both designs show high absorption rates in the narrowband region, making them suitable for filtering applications. The HMSPA with HS-MAs is particularly sensitive to variations in the refractive index, which is ideal for biosensing applications. Additionally, the deposition of a temperature-sensing material on the metasurface enables temperature sensing. The proposed HMSPA structures have potential applications in filtering, biosensing, and temperature sensing.

Chirality-selective transparency induced by lattice resonance in bilayer metasurfaces

Shuxia Zhao et al.

Summary: The study reveals that optical chirality can be significantly increased by coupling between localized surface plasmon resonances and lattice resonances, even for metasurfaces made of achiral unit cells. Interlayer coupling generally destroys Wood's anomaly and transparency. By utilizing Pancharatnam-Berry phase and propagation phase, chirality-selective transparency can be achieved in a designed structure with a high absorption g-factor close to the upper limit of 2.

All-dielectric perfect absorber based on quadrupole modes

Rongyang Xu et al.

Summary: The paper proposes an all-dielectric perfect absorber based on degenerate critical coupling of quadrupole modes to overcome the limitation of maximum absorbance of free-standing ultra-thin films. This all-dielectric perfect absorber can be utilized in photodetectors, optical filters, and optical modulators through photothermal effect.

Quality factor of plasmonic monopartite and bipartite surface lattice resonances

Joshua T. Y. Tse et al.

Summary: Surface lattice resonance (SLR) is a collective excitation of nanoparticle resonances resulting from the hybridization of localized surface plasmons (LSPs) and propagating Rayleigh anomalies (RAs). The quality factor of SLRs depends on the spectral detuning and the interaction strengths between LSPs and RAs. Studying bipartite arrays involving nanoparticle dimers shows that the coupling between bright and dark modes can significantly enhance the quality factor, which is not achievable in monopartite arrays.
