Carbapenem Resistance-Encodinc and Virulence-Encoding Conjugative Plasmids in Klebsiella pneumoniae

Xuemei Yang et al.

Summary: This review examines the key evolutionary routes of plasmids involved in disseminating exogenous resistance and hypervirulence-encoding genetic elements in Klebsiella pneumoniae. It identifies diverse but convergent paths that led to the emergence of conjugative plasmids encoding both carbapenem resistance and hypervirulence. An important evolutionary feature is the presence of transposable elements enabling frequent genetic transposition, fusion, and enhanced adaptation to bacterial hosts. Identification of key molecular markers on these plasmids improves tracking and control of life-threatening strains of K. pneumoniae.

Hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae Endogenous Endophthalmitis-A Global Emerging Disease

Dragos Serban et al.

Summary: This review documents the emerging hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae endogenous endophthalmitis in terms of incidence, microbiological characterization, risk factors, management, and outcomes. It highlights the importance of early diagnosis and preservation of visual function in patients with this condition.

An Assessment of Siderophore Production, Mucoviscosity, and Mouse Infection Models for Defining the Virulence Spectrum of Hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae

Thomas A. Russo et al.

Summary: Hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae (hvKp) strains are more virulent than classical K. pneumoniae (cKp), and can be differentiated by subcutaneous challenge in CD1 mice and intraperitoneal challenge in BALB/c mice. Siderophore production and mucoviscosity assays were not able to differentiate the virulence differences of hvKp isolates observed in mice.

Determination of the retinal toxicity of intravitreal colistin in rabbit eyes

Merve Ozbek et al.

Summary: The purpose of the study was to determine the adverse effects and safe dose range of intravitreal colistin. Results showed that 0.2 mg/0.1 ml was the safe concentration, while 0.4 mg/0.1 ml could lead to cataract development and pathological changes in retinal layers.
