Thermal stability and buckling analyses of novel encased composite cylinder with polyhedral shapes

Zhe Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the thermal buckling performance of an encased polyhedral composite cylinder under a varied temperature field. By using the energy method and an admissible expression, the potential energy function of the polyhedral cylinder is explicitly determined, and two equilibrium equations are developed. The critical temperature variation is analytically obtained, and the accuracy of the theoretical predictions is verified through a comparison. The parametric evaluations suggest that using a polyhedral cylinder with a low thickness-to-radius ratio and small numbers of sides is recommended in engineering applications.

Experimental and Numerical Assessment on Failure Pressure of Textured Pipelines

Hassan Karampour et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the failure of smooth and textured pipes through physical tests and finite element analysis. The textured pipes show higher buckle initiation pressures but only slightly higher burst pressures compared to smooth pipes. Based on the results, a textured design with N = 6 and alpha = 30 deg is considered optimum.

CFRP Strengthening and Rehabilitation of Inner Corroded Steel Pipelines under External Pressure

Jianxing Yu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the performance of pipelines repaired with carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) under external pressure. The results show that the collapse pressure of the composite-repaired pipe increased and the CFRP significantly reduced the strain in the defect region. The repair effectiveness mainly depended on the length, thickness, and interlayer cohesion.

Failure assessment of corroded ultra-high strength pipelines under combined axial tensile loads and internal pressure

U. Bhardwaj et al.

Summary: This study investigates the failure of corroded ultra-high-strength steel pipelines under combined axial loads and internal pressure through numerical analysis, and proposes an empirical model for burst strength prediction. The results reveal that both axial tension and corrosion defects significantly reduce the burst strength of ultra-high-strength steel pipelines.

Lateral Buckling of Pipe-in-Pipe Systems under Sleeper-Distributed Buoyancy-A Numerical Investigation

Zechao Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, sleeper-distributed buoyancy is used as an active buckling control method for the global buckling of PIP systems with initial imperfections. The accuracy of this technique is verified by comparing the finite element model of a 3D pipeline with experimental data. The effects of various factors on the global buckling performance are analyzed, and relevant calculation formulas are obtained and verified.

A semi-analytical analysis of strength and critical buckling behavior of underwater ring-stiffened cylindrical shells

Yang Yang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the strength and buckling behavior analysis of a ring-stiffened cylindrical shell for sightseeing submersibles under mechanical and thermal loads. It shows that external load has the most significant influence on the shell's strength, while shell thickness has the most obvious effect on its buckling load.

Numerical study on the effects of multiple initial defects on the collapse strength of pipelines under external pressure

Ruoxuan Li et al.

Summary: The study examined the impact of initial defects on the collapse strength of pipelines, focusing on the coupling effect of both single and multiple initial defects. Factors such as defect length, amplitude, and distance between defects were analyzed for their effects on pipeline strength.

Buckle propagation of damaged SHCC sandwich pipes: Experimental tests and numerical simulation

Guangming Fu et al.

Summary: The sandwich pipe (SP) with a high-strength performance and thermal insulation is seen as an effective solution for oil and gas transportation in ultra-deepwater. It consists of concentric steel pipes with a strain hardening cementitious composite (SHCC) annular layer, providing excellent structural strength and resistance to buckling under high external pressure. The interaction between the annular layer and the inner/outer pipes contributes significantly to the buckling resistance under propagation pressure.

Buckling analysis of ring stiffened thin cylindrical shell under external pressure

N. Rathinam et al.

Summary: In this work, FE models were developed to predict the failure modes of externally ring stiffened cylindrical shells, and the shell's instability failure modes were analyzed using finite element analysis. The developed FE models were validated by comparing numerical results with experimental data, ensuring their reliability.

Carbon fibre buckle arrestors for offshore pipelines

Mahmoud Alrsai et al.

Summary: The feasibility and efficiency of using CFRP buckle arrestors in steel offshore pipelines with different D/t values were investigated through hyperbaric chamber tests. The study found that CFRP arrestors can achieve optimal efficiency when using the WL technique, fine sanding surface preparation, and fibers oriented in the hoop direction. Results also show that CFRP arrestors can be thinner than conventional steel arrestors while maintaining similar efficiency levels.
