Economic forces shaping the evolution of integrated port systems - The case of the container port system of China's Pearl River Delta

Shan Li et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the evolution of the container port system in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and analyzes the economic drivers that have shaped port development in this dynamic region. By employing different concentration methodologies, the study explains the shifts in market shares among the three busiest container ports and the underlying economic forces driving these shifts. The paper argues for the need of greater coordination and collaboration among ports to avoid wasteful competition and duplication of resources.

Study on the transport advantage and optimal port scale of a Bay Area

Mingxia Zheng et al.

Summary: This study theoretically abstracts a Bay Area and a non-Bay Area using urban economics methods to analyze and prove the developmental advantages of the Bay Area due to its longer coastline. A mathematical programming model is built to determine the optimal number and scale of ports to be built in a given Bay Area, considering land, labor, and transportation as productivity factors.

Dynamics of the Asian shipping network in adjacent ports: Comparative case studies of Shanghai-Ningbo and Hong Kong-Shenzhen

Liehui Wang et al.

Summary: The evolution of adjacent container ports enhances the Asian port system. This study analyzes the dynamics of the Asian shipping network in adjacent ports, a case study of Shanghai-Ningbo and Hong Kong-Shenzhen ports. The results highlight that the container throughput of Shanghai and Ningbo ports increases simultaneously, while the container throughput of Hong Kong and Shenzhen presents the trade-off phenomenon. The two adjacent port groups generate geographically dispersed networks of container flow in the Asian region.

Port rank-size rule evolution: Case study of Chinese coastal ports

Qingjun Xu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the rank-size distribution of major coastal ports in China, finding that the current size distribution of ports is relatively stable, with cargo throughput tending to be decentralized and container throughput tending to be centralized. Different major coastal ports exhibit varying throughput growth patterns, and macroeconomics, technological innovation, and policies play a significant role in the evolution of ports.
