Effect of Weekly Subcutaneous Semaglutide vs Daily Liraglutide on Body Weight in Adults With Overweight or Obesity Without Diabetes The STEP 8 Randomized Clinical Trial

Domenica M. Rubino et al.

Summary: In overweight or obese adults without diabetes, once-weekly subcutaneous semaglutide resulted in significantly greater weight loss compared to once-daily subcutaneous liraglutide when added to counseling for diet and physical activity over 68 weeks.

Role of nutritional ketosis in the improvement of metabolic parameters following bariatric surgery

Fioralba Pindozzi et al.

Summary: This study found that nutritional ketosis is associated with greater weight loss and better metabolic status in patients undergoing bariatric metabolic surgery. Patients with better metabolic status have a higher capacity for ketogenesis, leading to more significant weight loss.

Changes in hedonic hunger and food reward after a similar weight loss induced by a very low-energy diet or bariatric surgery

Marthe Isaksen Aukan et al.

Summary: This study aimed to compare changes in hedonic hunger and food reward in individuals with severe obesity achieving 10% to 15% weight loss with a very low-energy diet (VLED) alone or VLED and bariatric surgery. The results showed that regardless of the treatment modality, weight loss can reduce hedonic hunger, but bariatric surgery leads to additional benefits in terms of food reward and preferences.

The effect of semaglutide 2.4 mg once weekly on energy intake, appetite, control of eating, and gastric emptying in adults with obesity

Martin Friedrichsen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of once-weekly subcutaneous semaglutide 2.4 mg on gastric emptying, appetite, and energy intake in adults with obesity. The results showed that semaglutide significantly suppressed appetite, improved control of eating, and reduced food cravings, ad libitum energy intake, and body weight compared to placebo. However, there was no evidence of delayed gastric emptying with semaglutide at week 20.

Ghrelin and Glucagon-Like Peptide-1: A Gut-Brain Axis Battle for Food Reward

Lea Decarie-Spain et al.

Summary: Dietary behaviors are influenced by food reward motivation, with gut-derived peptides such as ghrelin and glucagon-like peptide-1 playing a regulatory role. These peptides interact to affect various constructs related to food reward/reinforcement, including reactivity to food cues, effort-based food-motivated behaviors, flavor-nutrient preference, and aversion learning.
