An experimental investigation on the swelling behavior of compacted B75 bentonite

Haiquan Sun et al.

Summary: The study investigated the swelling behavior of B75 bentonite under different conditions such as initial dry density, vertical load, and pore fluid salinity. Through one-dimensional swelling tests and conventional oedometer tests, a unique relationship was found between effective stress and dry density at saturation. The empirical corrected double layer model successfully predicted swelling pressure during the tests.

Reduced-order modeling of near-field THMC coupled processes for nuclear waste repositories in shale

Kyung Won Chang et al.

Summary: Performance assessment of geologic radioactive waste repositories requires simulation of highly nonlinear THMC processes over long periods. This study uses reduced-order modeling to integrate geomechanical processes, finding that compressing fractures can reduce permeability and influence radionuclide transport and exchange. Less permeable shale host rock delays buffer swelling and chemical transport within the barrier system.

Effect of interfaces on gas breaktrough pressure in compacted bentonite used as engineered barrier for radioactive waste disposal

Vanesa Gutierrez-Rodrigo et al.

Summary: Gas generation in a deep geological nuclear waste repository can be affected by different processes, with gas transport mechanisms across barriers playing a crucial role in security assessment. Laboratory tests using FEBEX bentonite showed that dry density influenced gas breakthrough pressure values in saturated samples, while a sealed bentonite interface did not significantly affect breakthrough pressure or gas permeability.

Thermodynamics for clay minerals: Calculation tools and application to the case of illite/smectite interstratified minerals

P. Blanc et al.

Summary: The computing tools ClayTherm and ISTherm are developed for estimating the thermodynamic properties of clay minerals and illite/smectite mineral series. They combine previously published estimation models and can calculate the thermodynamic properties of minerals based on their compositions. The tools have been successfully applied to natural geological samples, providing valuable insights into mineralogical observations and geochemical analyses.

The important role and performance of engineered barriers in a UK geological disposal facility for higher activity radioactive waste

Ashley Marsh et al.

Summary: The effective management of radioactive waste is crucial for the utilization of nuclear energy, and the UK's policy involves disposal in a deep underground geological disposal facility. The GDF will need to safely contain radioactive materials for hundreds of thousands of years, with a combination of natural and engineered barriers providing the necessary isolation. Further research on the performance of engineered barriers is essential for the long-term safety of the GDF post-closure.

Effect of groundwater chemistry and temperature on swelling and microstructural properties of sand-bentonite for barriers of radioactive waste repositories

Asmaa Shehata et al.

Summary: Groundwater chemistry has a significant impact on the swelling characteristics of bentonite-sand material, with the swelling ability significantly decreasing as groundwater chemistry changes. The mineralogical composition of bentonite is altered by the groundwater chemistry in southwestern Ontario, Canada, resulting in decreased swelling capacity.
