Phylogeny and Species Delimitation of Chinese Medicago (Leguminosae) and Its Relatives Based on Molecular and Morphological Evidence

Summary: This study conducted morphological and genetic analyses on 19 Chinese naturally distributed or introduced species of three genera, revealing that 16 species could be well delimited. In addition, major incongruences between chloroplast and nuclear DNA trees were found, mainly occurring among deep diverging lineages, possibly due to hybridization, incomplete lineage sorting, and sampling errors. Further research with more detailed species sampling and large-scale genomic data is needed for a better understanding of species delimitation in these three genera.
