Unraveling patterns of disrupted gene expression across a complex tissue

Kelsie E. Hunnicutt et al.

Summary: Whole tissue RNASeq is a standard method in evolutionary biology for studying gene expression divergence by providing a comprehensive transcriptome profile of a given tissue. However, the diversity of cell types within whole tissues can lead to variations in cellular composition, impacting gene expression profiles. This study investigates the effects of cellular composition differences on gene expression profiles in whole testes samples, comparing them to enriched spermatogenesis populations in two species of house mice. The findings highlight the importance of considering histology in RNASeq and using methods that reduce sample complexity, as differences in cellular composition can modify expression profiles and potentially alter our understanding of gene ontological processes and gene expression evolution.

Providing a phylogenetic framework for trait-based analyses in brown algae: Phylogenomic tree inferred from 32 nuclear protein-coding sequences

Shingo Akita et al.

Summary: Analyses of nuclear protein-coding sequences in 39 Phaeophycean species belonging to eight orders provide significant support for resolving phylogenetic relationships within the studied taxa, confirming relationships seen in other sequences such as nuclear, chloroplast, and mitochondrial. This suggests that nuclear protein coding sequences may be a powerful approach to fully resolve interordinal relationships with increased taxon sampling.

High rates of evolution preceded shifts to sex-biased gene expression in Leucadendron, the most sexually dimorphic angiosperms

Mathias Scharmann et al.

Summary: Differences between males and females in dioecious plants are usually more subtle, but sexually dimorphic leaf size has evolved in the South African Cape plant genus Leucadendron. The sexual dimorphism is largely due to differential gene expression between the sexes. Despite the faster rate of expression evolution in sex-biased genes, there is no evidence of their adaptive significance in the evolution process.

Evolution of life cycles and reproductive traits: Insights from the brown algae

Svenja Heesch et al.

Summary: A study on the evolution of life cycles in brown algae revealed that diploid growth evolves when sexual reproduction is preferred over asexual reproduction. The research also found that haploid sex determination is ancestral to diploid sex determination, and isogamous species in brown algae evolved from anisogamous ancestors, contrary to the commonly reported pattern of evolution from isogamy to anisogamy.

A partially sex-reversed giant kelp sheds light into the mechanisms of sexual differentiation in a UV sexual system

Dieter G. Mueller et al.

Summary: In UV sexual systems, males have a V chromosome and females have a U chromosome. Despite lacking the U-specific region, a genetically male giant kelp strain can present female characteristics, but is unable to produce sperm-attracting pheromones. Transcriptomic analysis reveals that phenotypic feminization is associated with feminization and de-masculinization of gene expression patterns.
