Anomalous diffusion originated by two Markovian hopping-trap mechanisms

S. Vitali et al.

Summary: Through intensive simulations, it has been shown that the characteristic features of anomalous diffusion can be explained by a random walk driven by two different Markovian hopping-trap mechanisms. By studying ensemble and single-particle observables, it is found that this model matches the main characteristics of anomalous diffusion commonly observed in living systems. The transition of the walker's distribution from exponential to stretched-exponential and finally to Gaussian distribution can be observed by considering the inclusion of non-Gaussian intervals.

Unravelling the origins of anomalous diffusion: From molecules to migrating storks

Ohad Vilk et al.

Summary: Anomalous diffusion or transport, characterized by the nonlinear relationship between mean-squared displacement and measurement time, is widely observed in nature. Using data from various empirical systems, a method is employed to detect the individual origins of anomalous diffusion and transport. The method identifies three primary effects: long-range correlations, fat-tailed probability density of increments, and nonstationarity. The decomposition of real-life data allows for nontrivial behavioral predictions and resolves open questions in single-particle tracking and movement ecology.

Apparent anomalous diffusion and non-Gaussian distributions in a simple mobile-immobile transport model with Poissonian switching

Timo J. Doerries et al.

Summary: We investigate the transport of particles that switch between mobile and immobile phases. Despite the assumption of Poissonian switching, we observe transient anomalous diffusion and non-Gaussian displacement distributions. These findings are expected to have relevance for a broad range of processes in complex systems.

Measurements and characterization of the dynamics of tracer particles in an actin network

Maayan Levin et al.

Summary: The diffusion of a tracer particle in a viscoelastic material can be influenced by the ratio of tracer particle size to the characteristic length scale of the network. The type of diffusion performed by the tracer particles varies based on this ratio, showing features of fBm when the particle is large compared to the mesh size, normal diffusion when much smaller, and CTRW in between. A new model combining fBm and power-law distributed caging events has been proposed to describe the motion of tracer particles in actin networks.
