Effect of polar group on the 2,3,4-trihydroxy benzonitrile based liquid crystals trimers

G. Shanker et al.

Summary: In this study, the effect of different terminal polar groups on the liquid crystalline properties of trimers was investigated. Two new trimers were synthesized and compared with a previously reported cyano-substituted trimer. The results show that the terminal polar groups have a significant influence on the liquid crystalline behavior of trimers.

Liquid crystalline dimers containing a cholesteryl benzoate unit: smectic phase, chiral nematic phase and blue phase

Jun Li et al.

Summary: Multiple phases were observed in non-symmetric bent mesogenic dimers, including smectic A phase, chiral nematic phase, and blue phase. The phase transition was induced by UV light, causing structural changes in the molecules.

Synthesis and mesomorphic characterization of some novel steroidal mesogens: A structure-property correlation

Vanishree S. Bhat et al.

Summary: Steroidal derivatives have been found to be excellent mesogens with the potential to induce a wide variety of liquid crystalline phases, including frustrated phases. Novel monoalkoxy and dialkoxy benzoate derivatives of ergosterol and stigmasterol have been synthesized and studied for their mesomorphic properties, exhibiting various mesophases such as SmA, SmC*, N*, TGB, and blue phases. Some of these derivatives also showed gelation ability with organic solvents and were compared with cholesteryl counterparts.

Synthesis and mesomorphic characterization of novel liquid crystals derived from bioactive natural sterols

S. Vanishree Bhat et al.

Summary: Steroidal derivatives are well known for their diverse mesophases, with cholesteryl analogs showing different phases compared to stigmasterol and ergosterol derivatives. The study focuses on the mesogenic behavior of the compounds and the effect of replacing oxygen with sulfur, leading to differences in clearing temperatures.

Remarkable smectic phase behaviour in odd-membered liquid crystal dimers: the CT6O.m series

Rebecca Walker et al.

Summary: The synthesis and characterization of the first ten homologues of CT6O.m were reported, revealing a rich smectic polymorphism. Each CT6O.m homologue exhibited up to four smectic phases, with CT6O.10 showing a different sequence of smectic phases below the N phase. The phases were confirmed using a combination of techniques including polarised optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction and optical birefringence studies.
